How would you rate your Blu Ray disc compared to the same version in

STANDARD DVD?

I feel the picture quality is very good, but honestly kind of expected more of

a difference.

I would say the 5 BD is have watched are 10-15% better than standard

DVD. What has your experience been?

I have seen Lord of Heaven, Windtalkers, Flying Daggers, X2 and

5th Element.

All movies watched in 1080p on Sony BD-1 via hdmi to a JVC 70FH97

tv.

Sorry, Kingdom of Heaven. I know the other was an X-Men, but not the

first one.

I am not bashing Blu-ray. I own a player and believe it is the superior technology.

I am not interested in what HD DVD looks like. I am comparing regular standard

DVD's to Blu-ray.

The advertisements you see for Blu-ray say " up to 5 times the resolution of

standard DVD". I think Blu-ray is clearly better than standard DVD, but I don't

see it being 5 times better.

So back to my original question, of movies that you have seen in both formats,

how much better do you think the Blu-ray version is?

It varies with display size and viewing distance. The larger the display, the greater the perceived difference between an HD disc and a DVD, as the larger display will better exhibit DVD's limitations. The further away you sit from any display, the more difficult it will be to see differences between an HD disc and a DVD, since your vision will become the limiting factor.

Display size combined with the viewing distance will determine how well you can see the details. Basically, how large the "pixels" are in 2D space. Granted, how well your eye focuses at certain distances is also a factor. Large displays give you the ability to have more people getting the same/closer perspective to the display because the viewing distance can be larger.

So 6 ft away from a 5 ft screen is equal to 12 ft away from a 10ft screen but if you put someone 2 ft behind the first fewer, they will have a better perspective from the 10 ft screen. (10/14 vs 5/8).

A few of my BDs are marginally better than the DVD counterparts (mostly earlier releases, especially those from Lionsgate). Most of them are a big improvement. Almost every new release looks terrific!

Difference is about 20% to 25% better on my 50" Pio Plasma, (1365x768)

If I had the FHD1 1080p version of my plasma I would expect it to be even better.

I have some comparison pic's in the link in my sig below

Most of the 20 titles I've accumulated are in the top 2 teirs for PQ

XXX is the worst Blu Ray in my collection (and the Teir system agrees)

I heard the Fifth Element is almost as bad so never bought that one

too bad , those two are both great movies otherwise

This is true, I only have a lowly 50" SXRD compared to some of these guys who have like a mile long screen, and I can still tell a "HUMONGOUS" difference between the two. There are some DVDs out there that upconvert really nice, and I'll be like "Man this is really nice" Then I pop back in Underworld evolution and be like "NOW THIS IS JAW DROPPING GOOD
"

For me it varies *alot* by title. Typically the darker the movie the less benefit I see. It's also alot easier for me to see the improvement if I watch the HD version *before* the SD version.

I'm watching on a compartively small 1080p 40" Sony LCD direct view... but I sit pretty close at about 4-6 feet.

I only have 3 BD disks... Brothers Grimm, X-Men, and Underworld - and I'd say the improvement is about 40%, 30%, and 15%. (I really don't see that much with Underworld.)

I have a bunch of HD DVDs also - picture quality also varies alot by title. 12 Monkeys is probably only 10% better, but it's known to be one of the less impressive discs. Batman Begins on the other hand I find alot better - say 55%.

On a 50 inch DLP that is 720p and has an HD+ chip...Yes you see a big difference between SD-DVD and Blu-ray. However a good DVD title like "Star Wars" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark", on a good upconverter DVD player still look great. A bad movie in High Def may look great but it still remains not so much to watch. I for one can't wait until we start to see the big blockbusters showing up. Independance Day on Blu-Ray will be awesome and probably the first blockbuster film I'll buy.
