BD w/ combination: component video, HDMI audio, DVD?

2119 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  miata
Scenario: TV w/ component input only for video. Receiver (Onkyo 705) has HDMI. Want to use HDMI for the new audio formats (either original bitstream or PCM, don't care)

I use this combination of connections on a Toshiba HD-A2. However I run into this major annoyance: the player only has one output resolution setting, and if set to 1080i with the HDMI connected for audio, component output for most standard DVDs is disabled (the silly "can't upconvert copy protected DVDs over component" ban). So I find myself having to constantly go into the setup menu to switch between 480p for DVD, 1080i for HD-DVD.

Does there currently exist a BD player that avoids this annoyance? (i.e. can set it to send 480p for DVD, 1080i for BD, without having to go into setup menu every single time) Or at least a remote button to cycle between output resolutions?

My setup is the same as yours. I got around it by picking up the Vision FC4 talked about in this thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=858154
I have my RCA HDV5000 hooked up with component cables as my TV does not have HDMI either. I leave it set at 1080i all the time. When I put in a copy protected DVD it will come up with a screen that says high resolution playback prohibited (or something like that) and then it will automatically switch to 480p output and start playing the disc. Are you saying that the A2 won't do that automatically? Why on earth would Toshiba get rid of that feature? I would be very upset if I had to mess with resolution all the time like that.

My PS3 will automatically change resolution also, but I can't remember if it has a screen telling you it does so or not.
Yes, you can do this with the PS3 no problem.

DVD resolution will change output automatically to 480p, but you don't lose your HDMI output a la the Tosh A2.

I run this same setup at home: PS3 output hi-rez PCM via HDMI to my Denon receiver, and 1080i component to my older CRT HDTV. Also have an A2 that I have the same problem as you. So, I keep my Denon 3910 for standard DVD duty.

Unlike your RCA/Toshiba A1, the A2 can output HDMI and component video simultaneously. So, if you are watchin a HD-DVD, no problem. But, if you try and watch a copy protected SD disc, the player will down rez the component outputs to 480p, and switch off the HDMI output.

Hmm, my player shuts off the component video, keeps the audio playing over the HDMI, rather than the other way around.

Thx for the info on the PS3. I did some more digging on my own, according to the manual it looks like the Panasonic BD30 is also handling this better, the way I prefer.

Wish more manufacturers would be clever enough to support this combo. Almost scored a Sharp BD-HP20U from my mom who got it free w/ her new TV (she's not a movie buff so offered it to me), but according to this player's thread if you turn component on, HDMI is disabled completely, including audio.

Ooops, you're right. I had it backwards.
I'm pretty sure that this is a bug in all of the Toshiba HD DVD players. I had to use analog 5.1 audio on my HD-XA2 to avoid this problem. I have never heard of this problem on other players.
