BDP83-33-0715T Beta Test Firmware feedback thread

536 Views 65 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  Smarty-pants
Dear Beta Test Participants,

We are posting a new beta firmware version today. The firmware can be downloaded from http://download.oppodigital.com/BDP83bravo/UPG20090715.zip

Network update is also available for this firmware if your player has the previous beta version installed. The firmware is not available to the Early Adoption Program users at this time.

This revision contains a new decoder pack (v4228) from our chipset vendor and some changes to the HDMI handshake and video processor code. The changes from the previous firmware are:
  • Disc compatibility and Java performance improvement, especially for certain titles such as "12 Rounds" and "The Haunting in Connecticut". Further adjustment to color space conversion and HD/SD color matrix (ITU.709 and ITU.601) cross conversion. This part is still a work in progress and we are using this version to verify results. Further adjustment may still be needed. What we are trying to do is to use a programmable part called “3x3 matrix” inside the ABT2010 chip to do floating-point calculation for color space conversion. We hope to get a more accurate result than the hard-wired color space conversion feature in the chip. Rollback of the HDMI handshake changes in the previous beta test version.
  • Front panel text display of the audio format when a new format is encountered.
Once all updates are installed, your firmware versions should be:

Main Version: BDP83-33-0715T
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513 (except for units with “E202…” serial number. These units do not have an upgradeable MCU)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

If you download the zip file and use a USB thumb drive to install, please follow these steps to install the firmware:
  1. Download the firmware from the above link. Insert a USB thumb drive to the computer that stores the downloaded zip file, and unzip the firmware file to the USB drive. Verify that the USB drive now contains a UPG folder, and inside the UPG folder there is a file BDP-83.bin. Remove the USB drive from the computer. Turn on your TV display and the OPPO player. Make sure that there is no disc in the player and no other USB device is connected to the player. Insert the USB drive containing the firmware file to a USB port on the player's front or back panel. The player usually can recognize the firmware file and prompt you for firmware upgrade. In case the player does not prompt you, press the SETUP button on the remote control to enter the setup menu. Select Device Setup, Firmware Upgrade, and then Via USB. Please follow the on-screen instructions to complete the firmware upgrade process. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE PLAYER, UNPLUG THE POWER, OR PRESS ANY BUTTONS OTHER THAN NECESSARY TO RESPOND TO THE ON-SCREEN PROMPT DURING THE REMAINING UPGRADE PROCESS. In order to complete the firmware upgrade process, the player will turn off automatically. Unplug the USB drive after the player turns itself off. Turn on the player after the firmware upgrade process is completed. Check the new firmware version by going to the setup menu, and then selecting Device Setup - Firmware Information.
  2. Congratulations! You have just completed the firmware upgrade. Delete the UPG folder and its content from the USB drive so you do not accidentally install the firmware again.
If you choose to upgrade the firmware via the Internet, the steps are:
  1. Turn on your TV display and the OPPO player. Make sure that there is no disc in the player and the player is not playing any content from a USB device. Press the SETUP button on the remote control to enter the setup menu. Select Device Setup, Firmware Upgrade, and then Via Network. The player will start searching for the new firmware from an OPPO firmware server. Turn on the player after the firmware upgrade process is completed. Check the new firmware version by going to the setup menu, and then selecting Device Setup - Firmware Information.
  2. Congratulations! You have just completed the firmware upgrade.
Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you very much for the help in this beta test process.

Best regards,

I loaded the new fw, and at first glance the menu structure looks identical to the 0702 fw. New colorspace and deep color options are still there, as well as the PLII DSP option.

My player auto found the fw and downloaded via ethernet. The last digit is "T", so still not available to the public yet.

Further testing to come.

Glad you went first.

1280x720 with 24fps frame rate.

That was originally going into the Firmware Friday thread. Sometimes having too many tabs open is disadvantageous.
I intentionally skipped the last FW update. I had just received some Region 2 DVDs and wanted to watch them on the 83. Frankly, I was tempted to jump off the beta update ship at that point.

But, since I do still have the 981 that I can reinstall in my rack, I relented and installed the 715 firmware just now by Wi-Fi. All went well. A rather short update. But, it does have the "secret sauce" in it. Now my Region 2 DVDs won't play. Oh well...

You can always go back to the hacked fw. It's just as painless as installing current fw.

That's odd that you weren't able to download BE2403 loader.

Even though I skipped the immediately prior firmware, installing the 715 FW brought me completely up-to-date.
reload ; be2403[.beta test issued 6/26] I had FW that one before- at least i think i did.

reloaded; BDP83-33-0715T

All is AOK

** Edit, Jason and I had gone back to previous FW - for the tray. I liked the older FW[less of a clunk at the finish of the tray opening].

Thats why my loader was different- forgot. But I'll keep the current FW config..... just plug my ears when i open the tray...

Thanks, John

Initial first impressions...

Did a factory reset to default. I had wanted to ask this in the past, but never got around to it.

When going through the setup wizard, if you change the res to something other than default, the on_screen counter comes up and asks if you are sure you want to keep that resolution.

However, during normal operation of the player, res can be changed on the fly with no questioning from the player.

Seems kind of counter productive one way or the other.

Going into the setup menu to adjust speaker ditance and bass mangagment for MCH analog outputs...

With downmix set to 7.1, highlight the surround back speakers and the surround speakers. In the configuration box on the right of the screen, each individual speaker is labeled correctly.

However, if viewing the description narrative at the very bottom of the screen, the two surround back speakers are also referred to as surround speakers. All four speakers are named SURROUND SPEAKERS, when two should be named SURROUND, and two named SURROUND BACK.

I still think the screen saver should default to ON.

The new front display of audio codecs is nice, good addition.
But needs to be toned down, as any Chapter Skip will result in the codec showing up on the front panel. People are going to ***** about that.
I replayed Master and Comander and thats when I noticed the DTS Master logo in the

display instead of the small logo on the left a very nice touch.
Jason, can you talk a little bit more about what we should be seeing with this "Further adjustment to color space conversion and HD/SD color matrix (ITU.709 and ITU.601) cross conversion. The Reason, i ask is just watching 1/2 of the Star Trek Nemesis SD movie. Watched it also, last night. But the PQ looks better with todays FW. Colors are more softer(in a good way)/ slightly more accurate and more film like. It could be the lighting in the room. but unless i go back to old FW and do an A/B comparison- my eyes could be just ":hoping". But it looks better. color space 4:4:4

* three different SACD & 1 Cd. -dics> 2 song apiece. Played fine -
