‘Beforeigners’: Vikings & Burnt-Out Cops, HBO Europe Unveils International Trailer For Quirky Sci-Fi Drama

HBO has released the first international trailer for its quirky Norwegian sci-fi drama Beforeigners. The series, which comes out of HBO Europe and stars Blade Runner 2049’s Krista Kosonen and Aquitted’s Nicolai Cleve Broch, is to launch on August 21.

The drama, which will be available in the U.S. via the WarnerMedia-owned network’s digital platforms, was created by Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, the creative team behind Netflix’s Lilyhammer.

It follows a new phenomenon that starts happening all over the world. Powerful flashes of light occur in the ocean, and people from the past appear. They come from three separate time periods: The Stone Age, The Viking era and late 19th Century. No one understands how this is possible, and the people from the past, called ”beforeigners”, have no memory of what’s transpired. Only one thing is certain: they keep coming and there is no way back.

A couple of years later, Alfhildr, played by Kosonen and who comes from the Viking Age, is teamed up with burned-out police officer Lars Haaland, played by Cleve Broch, as part of the police department’s integration scheme. While investigating the murder of a beforeigner, they begin to unravel a larger conspiracy behind the origin of the mysterious mass arrivals.

The cast also includes Agnes Kittelsen (Max Manus) as Lars’ former wife Marie; Stig Henrik Hoff (The Thing) as the bike courier Tommy; Ágústa Eva Erlendsdottir (Bjarnfreðarson) as Alfhildr’s friend Urd; Stig Amdam (Occupied) as chief of police Harald Eriksen and Eili Harboe (Thelma) as Ada.

Directed by Jens Lien, Beforeigners is HBO Nordic’s second original commission, following Lukas Moodysson’s comedy series Gösta. It is exec produced by Hanne Palmquist, Steve Matthews and Antony Root. The 6×45 series is produced by Endemol Shine-backed Rubicon TV.

Beforeigners on HBO Now/MAX

So, "Beforeigners" is a Scandinavian police procedural in the vein of "Trapped" and "Carnival Row." This is a world where people have mysteriously traveled through time from the past and are settled in modern-day Oslo. (They're from the past. That's why they're called "beforeigners"!) I've only seen the first episode, but so far I'm intrigued.

Subtitle haters should know that it's in Norwegian with English subtitles.

Also, please note that this is on HBO Now. Even though "Beforeigners" was produced by HBO Europe, I'm not sure if it will be on the linear channel or HBO Go.

Post-edit oops. Dangit, I even did a search.

is there any difference in content between HBO Now and HBO Go?...I thought they both were the exact same, the only difference being that Now is a standalone service while Go is for people who already are subscribed to HBO through their cable company

EDIT: I just checked my HBO Go account and all 6 episodes of Beforeigners are available to watch

the premise of this show is very unique and interesting and it's getting excellent reviews as well...I definitely plan on checking it out...the fact that it's a foreign language show with subtitles is going to scare a lot of people away but as Parasite director Bong Joon Ho so eloquently put it- "Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films"...

"In the near future, time-travel refugees from three separate time periods--The Stone Age, The Viking Era and late 19th Century--have appeared. Set in Oslo a few years after the arrival of these pioneer "timeigrants," this series follows two lawmen whose investigation of a murder begins to unravel a larger conspiracy behind the origin of the mysterious mass arrivals"

I decided to start watching this...since it's only 6 episodes it's not a huge time commitment...I watched the first 2 episodes...the best thing about the show so far is the 2 main detectives...they are interesting and have some funny banter between them which helps get me invested in the show...the main mystery is not hooking me and the premise about all the various time travelers is a bit weird and not coming together for me yet...there are some strange Norwegian expressions and dialogue that left me confused and having to Google after the episode ended- I had no idea what a russebuss was

I give the show credit for originality and since I love sci-fi and time travel stories I'm hoping everything comes together by the end of the season...this is my first time using the Amazon Channel HBO add-on and it definitely looks better then my linear FiOS channel and even the HBO GO app...

I finished watching all 6 episodes...it's a good show...not in the top tier of HBO or sci-fi shows but it's worthy of a binge...the main murder mystery was wrapped up in a satisfying way...I like when shows play fair and give you enough clues early on that you can legitimately figure out who the killer is early on if you're paying close attention...this show does that...I give the show credit for originality as far as the time travel concept using people from the Stone Age, Viking Age and 1800's...but to me it seems like the show is mainly using that concept as a way of comparing it to today's real world issues regarding immigration etc

the sci-fi aspect of the time travel is OK but not something I'm dying to find out more about...the best part of the show are the 2 main lead detectives- Lars and Alfhildr...as usual with these Nordic type of shows the names of the characters are hard to keep track of...in the Nordic/Scandanavian genre I think other shows such as Trapped are better but Beforeigners is worth watching

I agree, a series well worth hunting down and watching. There are twists, one I never saw coming.

Oh, and we learn a new use for moss. :D

Who knew it could feel like a soft kitten?

Just watched the first episode and very much intrigued by the premise.

With more than enough English-language content to watch across the various streaming services, I usually don't go out of my way for subtitled shows (in spite of being "artsy-fartsy" to the point of snobbery in my 20s). But I do love me a fish-out-of-water time travel story, and I could use a good sci-fi adventure story that comes with a dose of humor. I'll keep my expectations in check and not expect the next GOT.

The next GoT it certainly is not, but a good romp none-the-less. I do hope there is a 2nd season.

I remember liking this, but I remember very little about it. Boy, I’m getting old . I’ll check out season 2 when I have some time though.
Both seasons are six (6) episodes in length.

SERIES / SEASON 1 RECAP:
Season 1 of Beforeigners takes place in Oslo, where sudden flashes of light appear in the bay in Bjørvika. People from different time periods—the Stone Age, Viking Age, and the 19th Century—suddenly appear in the present. Police officer Lars Haaland meets the first "time migrants", who speak Old Norse.

A few years later, the so-called "Beforeigners" struggle to integrate into modern Norwegian society. Some 19th-century individuals found work as journalists, office workers, and teachers, while most of the old Norse folk are homeless and sleep in parks. The Stone-Agers mainly live at the fringes and in forests.

SEASON 2 SYNOPSIS:
Season 2 of Beforeigners has Lars and Alfhildr investigate a brutal murder in Oslo, with ties to Jack the Ripper.
