Begginer 5.1 set up

Hi folks, new around here.

So for a long time I was looking into jump to the HT scene, and that time has come.
Currently I have a Philips OLED from 2018, PS5 and an apple TV 4K which I use for streaming apps and consuming series/films from my Plex PC.
I'm really new on this stuff, so I know like the basics. One thing that I think it could help is the layout of my living and the TV position, so you guys can have a better idea on what to recommend.

As you can see the living room has this open layout with an "L" shape to the right and on the opposite wall to the TV is the kitchen.
My idea is to start with a good budget receiver for 5.1 and skip a more expensive "feature-proof" one knowing this whole issue with the new HDMI ports, and maybe next year or later making the jump.
Saying that, I would prefer to expend on better speakers. I can start with 3.1 if you consider that my budget is tight ($1k5/2k).

Thx in advance guys.

@Algyy I am not sure what is available in your Country, but I would start in the speaker forum HERE

Then head over to the subwoofer forum HERE

Then figure out how much $$ you have left in your budget for a receiver and members here will gladly help with suggestions. Many receivers are getting hdmi 2.1 updates and repairs later this year.

Make sure you get a large area rug, those marble tiles will wreak havoc on the sound in that room.

Hey, thx for the reply.

Well, in terms of availability, here in Argentina I can find almost any model from Klipsch, dynaaudio, dali, kef, polk, jamo, etc.
But for the receiver I'll probably end up importing from some US eCommerce like Amazon, b&h, ebay, etc. since there's no much stock/variety here, so I can't rely (well I can but it'll be complex) on repairs/board swaps or something like that to fix any hdmi 2.1 issue.

I'll go to those subforums first like you suggested.

What's the issue with the tiles? you say it could affect the sound if no rug is placed below the speakers?
The tiles will reflect sound in a very efficient way relative to a rug. So it will mess up your sound stage, rug/carpet will dampen the reflection and greatly reduce the problem

I very much agree with the idea of staying at 3.1 and then building form tehre. That's the core of your system and putting all your budget into that will allow you to have a higher end system in the long run. And in the short run you can supplement with used or thrift store speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1

Big box AVRs like denon or yamaha are generally the best value. Don't get separates. Sounds like you know this already

As to what speakers specifically as Erik said go to teh speaker subforum and ask there. The speaker heads, some of whom have tested dozens and dozens of speakers will have better information than I

Could be an idea to start with only 2.1 also and save up a little extra for a center if needed since it looks like you sit fairly centered.
