Beginner in Home Theater...Please Help!

802 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  hernanu

Hello,

I'm new to this Home Theater stuff and have been trying to read as much as I possibly can. I want to install a system in an open living room space that includes the kitchen. It's about a 33" x 29" space. Here is the setup that I have been leaning towards going with:

4 NHT Absolute On Wall Speakers

1 Outlaw OSB-1 Powered Soundbar with H-PAS

2 LFM-1 EX Subwoofers

I have 2 questions. Would this be a good setup for the space and can anyone recommend a quality receiver that can handle the equipment that I've listed?

Thanks! Any recommendations would be extremely helpful

You really want to timbre match the front three.

From your post it seems you want to use a sound at as a center and that is probably not the best strategy.

Also, what is your budget for the complete system?

I have a budget of around $3500-$4000 for the complete system.
You can get a lot of very nice stuff with that budget. Dump the soundbar.

Any recommendations? All of the options seems to be completely overwhelming.
That's a big space. Are floorstanding speakers an option for the front?

We just moved into the home and the previous owner ran wires through the 4 corners of the living room area. II'm not opposed to floorstanding speakers but I was going to mount the speakers on the wall since the wires are already there.
Youve got the right idea with getting 2 high output subs. I would pass on the in wall speakers. They might look cooler but wont provide the best sound and it limits your options far too much.

I would also suggest a 7.2 system for such a large space. The extra 2 speakers will help fill the room and its well within your budget.
Forget on-wall or inwall speakers, and forget a soundbar on that budget, at least if you are concerned with sound quality. Like was said above, 2 subs are a good idea but I wouldn't go with the Outlaws when Hsu VTF3 s are nearly the same price. The VTF3s are a lot like the Outlaws but better, they are designed by the same guy and are using a very similar design but they are improved over the Outlaws. With two powerful subs, you won't need the extension of floorstanding speakers, I would go with some beefy bookshelf speakers. You might think about some Klipsch RB-81s in that sized room, at least if you like higher volumes, and a RC-62 center. For surrounds, the Klipsch RS speakers wouldn't be bad. For a receiver, I would look at the Denon AVR-X4000, it has the ability to calibrate multiple subs, which is not a feature you find on many AVRs.

I would do it different, for some good quality overall sound

If you dont mind refurbished this is a heck of a deal.

You can wall mount the surrounds and back surrounds but I would get towers for the front. By wall mount I mean on wall not in wall.

Go with diffused surrounds and direct radiating back surrounds.

The diffused surrounds will help fill the room. Direct radiating back surrounds can easily be wall mounted and pointed directly at the listening position.

I know you dont want the sub but something like this with a pair of bookshelf for back surrounds is an example of what Im suggesting.

Dual Power Sound Audio PSA XV15s . Those are probably your best bet for around the same price as the HSU VTF-3 MK4 and Outlaw EX for filling that size room.

That refurbished Yamaha receiver that bond007 posted about could certainly do the job, or maybe this DENON AVR-X2000 . Going with a refurbished would allow you to put more money toward the speakers.

Next, as others have pointed out, towers with matching center are your best bet for your front soundstage for room filling sound.
Dual XV15s wouldn't do any better at pressurizing a room than Outlaws or Hsus. D ual Reaction BPS 215 s might be a good idea though.

+1

A good option
With that budget I would take a look at Triad. The company is based in Portland Oregon where they make each speaker by hand and will color match almost all their models to match your decor. Triads come in many different price points.

Keep in mind that even if he maxes out at $4000 after he gets the subwoofers and receiver he will only be left with around $1800 for speakers and accessories. Not exactly an exotic speaker budget. Especially when youre looking at 7 speakers.

Whatever route is eventually taken, remember to give strong consideration to the room and room acoustics. Someplace like GIK Acoustics or Real Traps can help with some modest and affordable treatment options that can easily transform a mediocre room into a wonderful room.

At minimum, go check out there websites and give them a call, they're very helpful.

Good luck
