BenQ 8700 DIY plexi-mount pics

I have had a few requests for pics of my DIY mount I made for my 8700. To be honest I just copied someone elses idea here on the forum. Sorry I don't remember who to credit. Anyway, the mount is infinately adjustable and works great. Cost is less than $20.

Adam, looks great. I just got a Chief mount and was told by both Chief and ProjectorPeople to center the mount with respect to my screen but if I do so the lens will not be centered in relation to the screen. Am I correct in thinking that the "lens" must be centered?

Mark
Typically center the lens should be expected. It is possible for a manufacturer to offset the lens horizontally, but centering the projector body would be optically correct for only ONE throw distance. Centering the lens horizontally works for all distances but the mount needs to be offset to bring the lens to center. You can verify for yourself the centering by checking keystone. Centering is horizontally incorrect if the left and right image heights are unequal.
I center mounted mine (ie; lens is offset to the right from the center of the screen) I have very slight keystoning (half an inch) on the left side of the screen. The manual doesn't give any type of direction for this. Hindsight is 20/20, I should have mounted the projector with the center of the lens to center of the screen. But I can live with half an inch difference.
Thanks, that's what I thought. Well, I can now at least complain about ONE problem with my 8700 - the inadequate manual!
Adam,

Is there any sort of DIY instructions around to make this mount? Looks interesting, I would like to try..

Paul
Adam,

I created something very close to yours. I used wing nuts above the plastic to make adjustments very easily. Works great and cost less than $15!

Bob
I made one of these mounts as well. Try this thread. Same design even though it was for a Sanyo projector. I didn't use the compression springs. they aren't needed.

For the Chief mount, they make what is an LSB100. It is a lateral shift bracket. It allows the mount to be mounted center, but still shift the projector so that the lens is properly centered as well.

I have one and it works well.

Hey Guys.. I bought all the stuff to make this mount tonight, When I screw the M4 bolts into the projector they only go in a bit them stop. Is there a bottom out on these should I tighten the bolts down till they are snug?

Thanks

I didn't try to bottom mine out. I just screwed each one in a few turns and then tighened a wing nut down on each one to secure them.
Well they certainly seem to bottom out... seems like it is designed that way. I would be nervous of just a few threads.

Paul
I used M4 screws and they went in about 1/4", then a I tightened stop nuts to secure them. I would not trust just a couple of turns. What you are describing is a thread mismatch. You might have 8/32 threads instead of M4 threads. They look about the same. Did you try to screw them into an M4 nut, that should tell you if there's a thread mismatch. OR you got M5s and not M4s. If you got at a hardware store out of a white box drawer, then they could have been misplaced.

Bob
Nope I am sure they are M4, the 4mm Wing nuts spin onto them perfectly...

and all the way up.

Paul
pgodden, did you get yours as used or a demo. Perhaps the person before you stripped the threads by using the wrong bolts. If not, I would call Benq immediately and see what they say. You don't want to strip them, then your in big trouble down the road if you have a warranty problem.

Bob
Bought it new from Benq here in canada.... strange though they dont appear to be stripped, they turn by hand and just stop like they are at the bottom of the thread or something... will look closer tonight though

paul
pgodden, take a toothpick and stick it into the hole to see how deep it goes. That should give you the real depth.

Mark
if you know the model number of the chief mount, their website gives the

x,y and z offsets for the projectors they're designed for.

(when i was researching mounts for the IF7200 and the benq, this info

was available for the 7200. they hadn't designed a mount for the benq

yet at that time)

That is exactly what I was going to do, I will post the result tonight...
