Berkline 090 seats: How to Install Aurora 25 Watt Bass Shakers

1756 Views 22 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  jw15851
If anyone out there has the Berkline theater seats I would love some ideas on how to best mount the Aurora bass shakers to get the best effect.

I went with the 25 watts as there was at the time a Buyers event. And the wife indicated she wanted some tactile feel. not a lion in her pants.

With that being said I have no idea how or where to start on mounting these things or how to hook them up to my system.

I have Three Seats with the Arm rest in between each seat, and on the ends.

I have four Aurora bass shakers as identified 25 Watt. I also have lots of plywood, some free time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again for taking the time to respond.

Cheers,

I'll post a decidedly unhelpful "me too!" I'm in nearly the exact position as you except I have only 2 shakers. Looking under the chair, I didn't see any immediately obvious location that would be suitable for mounting. I think this project will require some plywood, as you imply. Anyone have experience with this?
What I ended up doing was attaching the Aura Pros to the rear of the seat, just under the fabric/leather skirting. The skirt drapes over the unit, so they are not noticed. I had tried attaching them to a 2x8 and then attaching that piece of lumber underneath the seats. These ends where attached to the front and rear slat (where the spring seat ass'y attaches). This work well for people under 200lbs. If some one larger than that sat on the seat the springs would come to rest on the 2x8.

You could certainly hide them in the arm rests since there is plenty of room...but I wanted the vibration to be centered at the seating area and not vibrate the cupholder to death!
LOL....Most of the guys I know are about 200+ I get the feeling if they sat down on these things they might be as effective as a fart in water.

I like the idea of putting them in front of the skirt, there does seem to be more space for mounting. I'm just a little confused as to what you would attach them to. Would it be too much to ask for maybe a picture...I think I understand but I'd love to see exactly how you did it.

The idea about putting them in the side rests is appealing, I have enough units that I could distribute them evenly through the three units.

I never botherd to look underneath to see if there was a board or piece of wood that sealed it off in a box. I just assumed this was the case. I wasn't home when they delivered them so I never got a chance to see what they looked like on their arrival just after they were set-up and installed.

Thanks to you both for responding I thought I was the only one out ther putting in the small shakers in the Berklines....What are your thoughts on the tactile feel of where you have installed them.

I finally hooked up a set of 7 Auras in my Berklines a couple of months ago (had them sitting for more than a year) and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of vibration. I hooked them to the springs directly under the chair with zip ties (a little towards the back of the seat) based on reading I'd done on AVS and other forums. I did this with the thought I could try them like that and then move them to do something more elaborate if I didn't like the results. I don't think I'm going to change my setup :). I've got some pictures of the install location I hunted down and attached below.

You don't mention what amp you're using as part of your setup which is a big component in how hard they'll move... determining amp location and wiring a bunch of Auras to get the correct ohm level was much trickier than the mounting IMO.

Click here for a good thread that helped me figure out wiring in series.

Pull the zip ties tight as possible with pliers once in place and partially secured. I trimmed the zip ties excess link after this picture was taken.

Good luck!

David,

That is absolutely ingenius!! I never in a million years would have thought of that. From what I have read most people seem to indicate you need to mount them to a hard surface. The way you've done it would certainly provide the best tactile feel. Do these things generate any heat? do you have to worry about big people sitting on them, and interfering with the reclining mechanism.

Thanks again ....I have had them sitting in my basement for well over 5 months...and just did not feel ambitious enough to "get at it" so to speak.

Which leads me to the next question and your link I have no idea how to hook them up to anything...if you could share your thoughts on that topic would be awesome!!

I currently have a Yamaha RXV 995. But I plan on Buying the Pioneer Elite 59TXi in January or when it is officially released. I was hoping to try and tie it into my Yamaha to test, and eventually would use that to drive it. If there is a better way do tell!!

Wish I could take credit for the idea :) read about another member doing it here successfully and thought it was an easy first step. Works great.

I haven't noticed any heat buildup (these things are really the 'speaker' and the amp is typically where the heat comes from). I'm a big guy and so are many of my friends, have had zero problems with any interference with the reclining mechanism. Just make sure you get your speaker wires lined up so they don't get caught up, which seems like it could be more of a problem.

I've got a dedicated inexpensive sub plate amp from Parts Express that many members here use and I've been very pleased with it. Not sure about the ratings, etc of your existing receiver, but you probably could use it if you wire them up correctly. Recommend you read the link I put above closely for getting the correct ohmage which is important.

Not really an expert in figuring this stuff out, so other members might be better suited once you decide what you're going to power them with. I did bookmark a few threads when I was educating myself to do my own install I'm pasting in below for you that might be helpful.

Got them all hooked in and I must say I am extremely happy with how that works.

In terms of wiring did you wire them in series, I have 3 that I will put in. Did you wire each seperately and take a feed back to the amp / receiver. Or did you wire them all off of one wire. I guess if I take a wire back fom each one to the receiver, if some guests don't like it then I can turn that one off, I guess thats assuming I buy the Amp from parts express. Is this correct.

Yes, I got the amp at Parts Express and I wired them in series. Since I have a set of four in one row and three in another, I have two separate +/- wires for each row. Check that first thread I linked above for a wiring diagram and pictures that explain how I hooked 'em up.

There isn't really a separate 'on-off' for each shaker with the sub amp, one master level controls them all. I guess if (assuming you used your old receiver) your receiver had the correct (low) wattage you could hook them up to individual speaker channels with speaker size set to large and would be able to control the volume for each channel to adjust how much output went to each one.
Somniplex,

Which amp from parts express did you use for your seven Aura Shakers?

I actually have 6 of the 50 watt pro series.

The one I have is the 250W with remote. Click here for link to item.
A great deal on a used amp can be found in the NHT MA-1. This is a component style external subwoofer amp that mates with NHT subwoofer. You can usually find the stand alone amplifier on Ebay or web searches...like here

http://www.kernads.com/tvandstereo.html

Here the seller is asking $75.00 . I purchased mine last year for $80.00 on Ebay. The amp is rated at 80watts at its modest mono channel. It is also equipped with an adjustable crossover.er..which is great for tuning the Aura Bass Shakers. Don't be fooled by the low wattage rating. I run SEVEN Aura Pro Bass Shakers off this amp. The volume on the MA-1 is set just near the 1/4 mark. It powers the Aura's without difficulty. I never imagined it would do the job. I originally purchased it to power the rear centers in my 6.1 configuration. I had planned on buying a Parts Express Sub Amp plate to do the job...glad I didn't. One great aspect is the component case the amp is provided in. It can easily co-exsist with other components in an audio set up and look great, not to mention it has the Auto-On function when an LFE signal is present.

I'mListening, Somniplex thank you for your quick replies.

I'mListening, I will check into the NHT amp. I really like the idea of only using one amp for seven shakers.

Is anyone else out there using one of these amps or another amp with the pro-shakers?

I will be running six shakers.
Craig,

I am using 7 of the Pro Shakers on 7 Berklines with 2 of the PE 250W plate amps. I very rarely ever see the amps being driven more than 50%. You can probably get away with 1 amp unless you like the chairs to lift off the floor. I drive them just hard enough to fill in the
Maddogmc,

Still looking into which amp to use for my shakers. Right now the front runners are NHT and the PE 250W. I am going to call parts express to talk with a tech about my needs and see what they have to say.

I'mListening,

It sounds as though you are happy with that NHT Amp! ;)

I think you may have sold me on the MA-1 if I can get it for a good price. Does anyone else out there have any amp recommendations for Aura Pro's?

Craig
I have made the decision and am going to purchase the PE 250 plate amp from Parts Express for my six 50 watt pro shakers.

Does anyone have a good method for mounting the amp?

Help please!

Craig
Build a small box?

This is what i'm going to do. Since I'm currently lacking a rack, I'll use the box to prop my HTPC up. (I need it a few inches off the floor to meet my video cable as its a thick bundle of RG6 that can't be bent easily to meet the HTPC.)
spearce,

Yes, I was thinking it might actually come to that.

What I may do is buy the amp very soon and when I am ready, make an adequate mount for the amp once I see how things lay out with my theater. Right now, I am piecing together some of the smaller items so when it comes time to buy my gear it wont be such a shock to the wallet.

If anyone has a solution, please post your idea's.

Craig
