I'm looking to replace my aging epson cinema 200+ 720p with a newer 1080p with better contrast

I have a 120" screen that's ~12ft from the projector. It can be closer if needed....

There are 11 1080p projectors that have the proper throw distance:

ViewSonic PRO8300

ViewSonic PRO8200

ViewSonic PJD7820HD

Acer H6510BD

BenQ W1070

BenQ W1080ST

Epson 8345 Platinum (LCD)

Epson Home Cinema 2000 (LCD)

Mitsubishi HC4000

MITSUBISHI HC7900DW

The projector is ~ 3 ft to the right from where I sit.

I've had a few older DLP projectors, I could hear the color wheel over the fan noise... Has this improved at all?

The room is fully blocked from external light sources.

The main video source would be DVDs and blurays played on a HTPC with VLC. Maybe some games like GT6 if I get a PS3.

Bulb life is not a big deal, It would be used to watch 2-3 movies a week. My cinema 200+ had a new bulb ~ a year ago and is at 600hrs.

Screen is an elite screens 120" SRM pro.

What's going to be the best overall projector?

Mitsubishi HC7900 by a pretty wide margin. It may not be the brightest but it should be fine for 120" in a light controlled room. I'm running 106" and it's more than bright enough in eco mode.

Mine is directly over my head and I can hear it when there is no sound but any level of audio from the speakers drowns it out, I've never heard it while watching a movie or gaming.

I too like the 7900 but I hate to put a white projector on my jet black ceiling.

Nice, you won't be disappointed. At regular MSRP it was $1000-$1500 more than the rest of the units on your list. It really does hold it's own with any projector in the $2000-$3000 range.

+1 to the HC7900 - "You choose wisely" to quote the knight in The Last Crusade.

The high quality optics alone are worth the price of admission, and the contrast looks great compared to the usual entry level DLP group which I'd call "average to good."

What about Mitsubishi getting out of the TV/projector market?

They got out because they couldn't make any/enough money, not because they don't make good projectors. I imagine them selling us $2k+ projectors for $800 is not really helping the situation now either.

They're still supporting them for the full warranty period.

No. The next model up (8000) is black. It's supposedly reserved for local vendors only though, so you won't find it online from an authorized dealer, unless Mits lifted that restriction to get rid of them too.

The white case is my only gripe, but I rarely look at the projector, so it's not too much of an eyesore.

The HC8000 is supposed to be local dealers only, although you can find a few on eBay for a few hundred more than the HC7900 if you count the included lamp at full retail value. The only thing the HC8000 really adds is another fixed iris, and a variable (not dynamic) iris in addition to the fixed iris and dynamic iris in the HC7900.

So the 8000 can get the black floor down a little bit more if you are on a really small screen, but I can't see myself many situations where I'd want to clamp down the variable iris after some time with the HC7900.

precisely - why I bought a second new mitsHC4000 (other is a three yr old 3800 actually) as soon as I heard they were leaving the market - for 680 bucks last month.

the best blacks for DLP - with a good contrast.

I just heard that Dalite dropped their HiPower screen - the good version. Glad I bought mine 9 yrs ago for my original Optoma H31 back in the day.

dumb move Dalite!

I bought the Mitsubishi HC7900...

After hearing about this, I'm pretty sure I am going to go this route. Any major disadvantage to getting this over a BenQ w1070? I figure this one is also 3D but higher 2D image quality... I couldn't care less that it's $100-200 cheaper, I just want the best PJ for me under $1000 that does 3D.

Would it make sense to buy a bulb or two next year before they become super scarce, or is that an issue?

From what I've been told, the Mits uses a fairly common lamp, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find in the future. I can't offer any comparison to the BenQ other than the fact that when I checked pricing through AVS, about the same time I bought the Mits roughly a year ago, I was told that they stopped carrying the 1070 due to too many problems. I have no idea if anything has improved with their production since then.

I have not seen the 1070. But I received my HC7900 a couple days ago and I'm blown away at what you get for $800. I paid $3000 for my Samsung h710 8 years ago! Its still a decent projector it the mits blows it away.

Hello all, I am looking at buying the 7800 as a backup PJ as the pricing is too good to pass up. Currently have the HC9000 mounted in the HT. The reason I am posting, I miss having DLP projector! Recently had to use my HC1500 that was our first PJ, due to lamp replacement in the HC9000. Even though the 1500 is 720p, the picture POPPED off the screen, a very noticable difference to the HC9000. Dont take me wrong, the HC9000 is an outstanding PJ. So anyone thinking of purchasing before they are all gone, go for it. Thank goodness no one in our home has issues with rainbow effect as the 7800 is going to be mounted next to the HC9000. Regards Tony
