Best $300 receiver to go with Athena Point 5?

910 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  jvgillow
I'm looking for the best receiver for around $300 to go with the Athena Point 5 speakers. 7.1 analog inputs would be a plus, just incase thats ever supported in HD-DVD/Blu-Ray ;)

Thanks for the help!

Edit: I was looking at the Panasonic XR55, but its out of stock everywhere. I could start looking for it on Ebay and Ubid, but is that my best option?

Also, my room is 20x11 ft, which I don't think is very big. I'm looking more for sound quality over loudness :)
I was also trying to hold out for the panasonic xr55 or 57, but couldn't wait anymore. I got the pioneer vsx816 (MSRP $299) last week to go with my point 5's and p4000 sub. I'm still tinkering with the settings, but I am very happy with the purchase. It's got plenty of options, but has the analog inputs for 5.1 only.

Some people on the forum have commented that the point 5's are bright and the pioneer receivers' warmth complement bright speakers. BestBuy has them in stock, you should give it a listen. Good luck!

My Toshiba HD-DVD player "only" has 5.1 analog outputs anyway, and these new formats might NEVER output REAL 7.1 through the analog outputs. If that day ever comes, I guess I could hook up the extra 2 outputs to my stereo and put it in the back of the room ;)

Can anyone else vouch for the Pioneer VSX816?

I've previously owned a vsx-d912 and a vsx-d914 that I used to power Athena micras, and point 5's. I believe the 816 has a very similar if not the same amp section as the 912/14. The 816 has more crossover options compared the the 912/914. I set the crossover with the point 5's at 100Hz and it powered them just fine. I think you'll be very happy with the 816/point 5 combo.
I just got the pioneer vsx516 a little over a week ago. I also think the Pioneers warmth is well matched with the Athenas. Harmon Kardan is also known for being a good match but that would put you slightly over budget for a receiver. Actually really the only negatives I've ever read about mating a receiver with the Athenas is Yamaha. Some say it's considered a bright receiver and matched with bright speakers is tiresome for listening for extended periods. Then again some people like the brightness. it's a matter of taste. I'm very happy with my pioneer < $200 receiver though and think you will be more than happy with it.
Ok, after some researching, it now seems I will be going with a combination of Athena speakers, instead of the Point 5.

Will the recommondations change if I change my setup to this?

The speaker setup you're considering now is an upgrade from the point 5's. If you're willing to upgrade speakers, you should also consider upgrading your receiver or compromising if you're on a budget somewhere between.

As I said before, I am still tweaking my setup, but overall, I am happy for what I spent. Before Hurricane Katrina, I owned a Denon 985S with JBL SCS300.7 speakers. The Denon was superior to my pioneer vsx816, but I wasn't ready to spend the same amount of money that I did before. Instead, I opted for better speakers (which the athena point5's and asp4000 are better than the JBL's), but less of a receiver at this time (maybe I'll upgrade after hurricane season  )

You're on the right track, though. If you buy decent speakers and a budget receiver. You can always upgrade the receiver easily. ;)

The F2.2s will likely beg for more and better power; I'd go with the Athena B1.2s instead, possibly including for the rears too.

With Athenas a warm receiver like a Marantz or HK would be a good bet. For Marantz look at accessories4less.com for great deals on refurbs, and Harman Audio on eBay for refurbed HKs with full original HK warranty.

The Athena F2 speakers are the most efficient out of the entire Audition Series lineup which means you need the least amount of wattage to get the same volume level as the other speakers (F1/B2/B1/C1/R1). Granted, the difference isn't that drastic but something to consider nonetheless.

If you plan on running the F2's full-range then yes you would definitely want a quality amplifier hooked up to them.
