What do the experts consider to be the best 48-52 inch RPTV out at the present time?

I hear the Hitachis are hard to beat.

Thanks in advance!!!

IMHO the HLM507w does the trick for me. I like everything about it except the IR controls not having descrete values for TV/VIDEO and ON/OFF and the lack of a second dvi input. outside of that I love it.
Larger that 52" at 53" - the Pioneer Elite PRO530HD

The Best 48" - 51" RPTV?

THE HITACHI 51" SWX20B ! ! !

It will hang with any RPTV that's twice it's price and beat most of them.

Fully tweakable, and a great image.

Infact, the SWX bested the ELITE in a few areas in back to back testing at www.avguide.com

Here is the link and the attached PDF review against the Pioneer ELITE back to back.

Oh ya.... did I mention that the Hitachi costs half as much

Here is the last paragraph quoted from the review:

"The 57SWX20B is my current favorite of the RPTVs I've reviewed, and I feel confident that this set, when carefully calibrated, can hold its own, picture-wise, with any similarly sized competitor, regardless of price. As I made measurements and dug deeply into the service and convergence menus, I was greatly impressed at the unusual yet effective way Hitachi has designed certain technical aspects of this set, including the very obvious efforts the company made to improve last year's model. The 57SWX20B may not have the best-looking cabinet, but its overall picture quality is definitely among the very best, and at a price I consider a bargain. "

Here is another review that's even better from Stereophile's Guide to Hometheater Magazine

www.stereophileguidetohometheater.com

Read the last page, where they also quote:

" The Hitachi 51SWX20B is the Best Rear projection TV that I have reviewed to date "

With street prices under $2499 at national dealers like Circuit City, it's a great alternative to a $4000 plus specialty dealer only model from the competing brands that's near impossible to find and see and compare to other RPTV's.

I have alot of exerience with RPTV's and I would give the 51" SWX Hitachi my highest Recomendation.

Sorry,

The magazine link for Stereophile's Guide to HomeTheater is:

and

You can also learn a great deal more about it at Hitachi.com, Hitachi has a very good website with excellent video's about Projection TV technology and information about how they work, as well as Hitachi's own projection TV technology.

http://www.hitachi.com/tv/discover/t...d_proj00.shtml

Watch the apple quick time home videos.

Here is some more links:
http://www.hitachi.com/tv/discover/a...ut_index.shtml

above talks about how Hitachi makes more than 60% of the parts for ALL projection TV's. Hitachi claims their HD-WIDENECK CRT is better than industry standard OEM models. Hitachi is the only company that makes almost all thier own parts and owns the entire core of technologies needed.

http://www.hitachi.com/tv/discover/t...d_proj02.shtml

Talks a little more about that, and the CRT and lense system Hitachi uses.

And here is the 51" SWX specs from Hitachi's website:
http://www.hitachi.com/tv/browse/pro...51swx20b.shtml

http://www.hitachi.com/tv/browse/pro...x20b_specs.pdf

and Here is the link to Hitachi.com for the brochure:

Well, my vote has been cast. Anyone else have a favorite or "BEST" 48"-52" RPTV?

Do you actually own one of these? I read one review which sounds great! but I am sure there are negatives with every set and those should also be spelled out as well. One thing I was not sure about was the component/DVI inputs. Do they take 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i natively? I did not see this.

They are all displayed at 540p/1080i You can choose which one with a VIRTUALHD button on the Remote control.

How is the upconvertion from 720p to 1080i looks? Does it do a fair job or is it not noticeable?

Actually I have a 86" diagonal Front projection display based on a DLP projector in my theater.

I did own last years SWX before the upgrade.

I actually know about 10 close freinds and family (My dad has SWX too) that own them. Many of these freinds are also co-workers who work in consumer electronic sales and video products. They also made the choice to own a Hitachi, even though the place we work also carries about 10 of the other top brands of RPTV.

and, Yes.

To answer you question more clearly.... 720p looks great on the SWX, but it is converted to 1080i for display.

Almost all RPTV's do this... including Sony, and TOSHIBA.

The other alternative is that the screen goes black when fed a 720p signal, Like Mitsubishi, RCA, Panny CRT, (LCD does 720p) and others...

I am glad Hitachi does not do this...because many ABC and ESPN stations broadcast 720p, and a few XBOX games do 720p too...

Hitachi also looks the best of bad SDTV singals.... like analog cable.

It looks great because it's HDTV....

Few normal People can tell the difference.

Find a local Circuit City and have them set the HDTV box to output 720p instead of 1080i.

You will notice that the Panasonic's and RCA's go black screen.

Sony and Hitachi both look great still... with the 720p signal.

forgot to ask. What's the native resolution of this TV? Have you connected it to a HTPC? If so, was there overscan/underscan on the image.
under DVI there is no overscan.

Overscan can be reduced very easily....anyways.

There are many tweaks and threads about how to do it.

4% is usually the sweet spot on a Hitachi SWX, which is an acceptable amount of overscan, via any non DVI input or internal tuner.

The native resolution of this TV is 1280X540p or 1280X1080i for any DTV signal.

1080i is displayed NATIVE, 540P is also DISPLAYED NATIVE.

480i/480/720p is converted to the 540p/1080o X 1280 display resolution.

DVI is native.... not converted at all.

I have to agree here. I only have the 43" model, but the image it displays is absolutely fantastic, and you never have to worry about burn-in.
Burn in is almost a myth.

I work in retial and see the same screen on the 51" SWX everyday for 6 months. The menu of monsters INC dvd.

No burn in yet.

Our store is open and the tv runs from 9am-10pm 363 days a year.

That's suprising. Burn-in is definately a real issue on both rear projection CRT-based sets and plasma televisions, and to a certain extent on direct-view CRTs. There are numerous reports in this forum as well as the Home Theatre Spot, and I'm sure just about anywhere else that discusses televisions. Don't be fooled.

I suppose if you never watched 4:3 material in 'normal' mode, or played videogames, or watched NBC (;)), you might be okay.

Like I said...

My Dad has last years SWX. He watches atleast 6+ hours a day with bars on the sides.

He watches alot of NBC and MSNBC as well as stock channels with tickers.

NO BURN IN... it's almost two years old.

Just set your contrast under 80% and you should be ok if you pay attention to it.

Burn in will not occur from watching NBC, or even alot of NBC... it will occur from watching "ONLY" NBC.

Burn in is simply uneven wear of the phosphors... one area wears faster than the other..

If you mix it up... and watch a full screen for a little while.... then perhaps a different stretch mode...

You should be fine

80% contrast is much too high IMO. I wouldn't dare set it higher than 50% ever. With properly set contrast and a variation in material/pic modes...burn-in is unlikely.
If cost is not an object, the new Sim2 RTX45 and 55 are the best. But you need to be ready to shell out over $10K and then defend yourself against all the Samsungophiles who think you are nuts for spending over twice the price of a Samsung rear DLP.
