i only have 5.1 speaker setup, with no plan to upgrade. i am willing to spend up to $1800. What is the best way to go?

does it pay to spend more money on a reciever which has the extra amps inside just to get an increase of 10 watts or so on the five channels i'll be using? the best i have found so far is the integra 6.2, denon 3802, and kenwood vr-5700. what do you think? or should i go with seperates and just buy a 5 channel amp, without spending extar on the other 2 amps?

Chances are the best 5.1 receiver, is going to be a 6 or 7.1 receiver because they are all going that way. It might benefit you to get a 7.1 receiver that only powers 5 channels to save some money on amps you won't use......YET.

If I had $1800 I would be looking at the following, some of which you mentioned:

Denon 3802 or the 4802

Pioneer Elite TX37 or 39, which can be found in you price range

Onkyo 989

Harman Kardon AVR 520 or the new 8000
