Hey guys, this is my first post so I apologize if it's in the wrong section. I'm looking to buy a new TV soon and was wondering what the best bet was for around $1,000 in the 50-55" range. I do not care about 3D at all, and don't really care for apps either, so those features aren't very enticing. I really just want the best picture quality in that budget and preferably a thin bezel, but obviously the quality is more important. Thanks!

I was in the same boat as you in terms of not needing 3D or apps. You could look at the Samsung UNF6300 series TVs, which has a thin bezel and does not have 3D capabilities. This line comes in both 50 and 55 inch varieties. The 50 inch model is currently selling for ~$950 at most retailers, while the 55 inch model is going for ~$1000.

If you're looking for the best in class, you'd probably want to take a look at the Sony 55W900a, which also has a thin bezel. It has excellent black levels and very low input lag, which comes in handy if you plan on gaming. It was on sale recently for $1599, but the price has since gone back up to ~$1700. With the 2014 model TVs coming out soon, it's possible the price could come down again back into your price range.

And depending on when you want to buy, you may also want to consider the 2014 offerings from Vizio: http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/24381825/vizio-announces-2014-e-series-and-m-series-hdtv-collections-featuring-best-in-class-picture-quality-with-advanced-local-dimming-and-full-array-led

The 50" 2014 Vizio E Series is $600, the 55" is $700 (both available now), the 60" is $900 (available this week or next), the 65" is $1200 and the 70" is $1600 (both hopefully coming before the end of March).

If you can wait a couple months before you need to buy, the Vizio M Series has a slimmer bezel, higher refresh rate, and double the number of local dimming zones (both are FALD panels). The M Series is supposed to be out in May and the 50" is $730, the 55" is $900, the 60" is $1200 and the 65" is $1500.

If you can hold out until even later in the year, the Vizio P Series is 4K, has double the number of local dimming zones again (to 64) and should be out before sometime between June and August: http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-17742_7-10019233-17.html The 50" is $1000, the 55" is $1400 and the 60" is $1800...
