Best 7.1 home theater receiver for under $400?

I'm currently using an older Onkyo that doesn't have HDMI support. It's over 15 years old and still works great, so I was leaning towards that brand. I also hear good things about Yamaha.

I was considering the Onkyo TX-NR686 or 676. I'm not sure how much better "THX certified" really makes one sound.

This Denon AVR-S740H also caught my eye. I'm not sure what makes it less expensive than the X1500H considering it has more watts per channel, but Amazon has a 5% off coupon on it:

Denon AVR-S750H or the Sony STR-DH790. If you could increase your budget by an extra $100, the Yamaha RX-V585 or the Denon AVR-S950H.

I see the S750H here for $300. Is that site legit? It's refurbished but comes with a 1 year warranty.

I see the same company sells it on Amazon too. I'm also trying to find the watts per channel. Online I'm seeing 75, 110, and 165.
Accessories4less is legit...

No worries buying from them.

i own three denons. all have been flawless, and one onkyo. im a little biased to the denons obviously. pick one that has the features you want, there are some good choices listed in your thread.

I was at Costco yesterday, the TSR-7850 is $20 over your budget. Well worth it though.

If you're an Onkyo fan this might interest you. Better than the nr676 or nr686

This is the best AVR you can get for under $400. It's the Denon X2400H, which has a better version of Audyssey (XT...and yes, this matters.) vs. the others that have been recommended.

I own it, so I can definitely attest to it being a fantastic AVR, and a MAJOR ugrade (it's not even a close comparison) over the Onkyo NR656 that it replaced.

Here is the link for the "FACTORY" refurb from accessories4less for $319. It comes with a 1 year warranty, but I suggest adding additional coverage, which starts with 2 years (3 yrs. total) for $25.99. You can add up to 5 years (6 yrs. total) if you choose to do so.

As for your question regarding wattage, the one you mentioned is 75 WPC/2 Channels driven.

Hope this helps,

Darrell

By far, the best deal out there.

If you're looking at the x2400 from AC4L then spend $10 more for the x2500. It adds a phono input and can overlay GUI over Dolby Vision. I own the x2400 and it is missing those two features. Good AVR otherwise.

Thanks, a lot of good ones to consider.

One more from accessories4less that looks like a good deal. Been going over reviews for everything:

Onkyo TX-NR777

I've never heard a Denon and know they're supposed to be one of the best sounding. One minor concern is I'm not an Apple user and most don't seem to support Chromecast. They all have Airplay though. May never use Chromecast anyway.

Don't let the WPC be the main determining factor if that's why you're considering this one. 95 WPC vs. 110 WPC isn't that big of a difference. What makes a HUGE difference is the room correction software & processing capabilities.

Whenever I stated that the difference between my Denon X2400H (Audyssey XT/95 WPC) and my Onkyo NR656 (AccuEQ/100 WPC) wasn't/isn't even close, is not an exaggeration. The bigger soundstage/spatial seperation is one of the biggest surprises, and the difference that it made when listening to music was also night & day. With the Onkyo I had to crank up the sub trim to get the low end that was needed, and voices were way too pronounced (especially women's voices). And again...the overall surround processing is SOOOO much better with the Denon.

This is in no way just me having a particular "brand bias". It's just some info from my recent upgrade experience that I wanted to share to help you make a good choice. That is after all why you're asking for help...is it not? :D

Yep that's why I'm here. I don't want to jump into anything.

Glad to hear your experience with both brands. I think before I commit I'll have to hear a few for myself. It would be hard with some of the discontinued models I'm looking at though. CNET seems biased towards Onkyo over Denon, calling Denons more "warm" but not as good for music in a couple reviews I read. I don't trust pro reviewers either and they don't review every model from every manufacturer. They don't even have a review for some of the ones in this thread.

Looking more into Audyssey it looks like quite a few people prefer that. Right now I think the AVR-X2500H may be the one. Anything would most likely be an improvement over my TX-SR702. I just got all new Polk S-series speakers and running them on an antique.

I think CNET is smoking crack.

A. Warm is what you generally want for music.

B. Denon is NOT considered warm by it's consumers, and has always been cited to be better for HT vs. Marantz. "WARM" would be the description of their counterpart, Marantz.

C. CNET is smoking crack!! Lol

D. It's hard to deny word of mouth by the consumers that own these products. Although, you do have to learn to read between the lines to an extent to be able differentiate between the biased reviews vs. the good, honest reviews. ;)

I assume the X2500H is the next year in line compared to the 2400. Just getting familiar with deciphering some of these part numbers.

I'll probably go ahead and order one tonight after doing a little more digging. No way will I find a place with discontinued receivers on display but some of these deals are worth a shot. Especially manufacturer refurbished with a warranty. The receiver I have now I paid over $400 for back in the day manufacturer refurbished and it hasn't skipped a beat. I hear they can be better than new since they've been double-checked for bugs.

Yes, the X2500H is the 2018 model, whereas the X2400H is the 2017 model, and for $10 more, you might as well get the X2500H.

Also, I actually hadn't thought about the refurbs possibly being better, but I like the way you're thinking here. :D

As far as demoing them, the only way to get a true representation of what it can do is by doing it "in-home" with it connected to YOUR speakers in YOUR room. Of course you'd have to purchase one first. Lol

Don't overthink it. ;)

After reading every review I could find, I decided to try the Denon X2500H. It was almost a coin flip between that and the Onkyo TX-NR777. Both sounded like everything I was looking for and the refurbished prices were close. 95 watts should be more than I'll ever need even though the speakers are rated over 100. I don't plan on getting any knocks on my door.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Hopefully all goes well. This old TX-SR702 actually sounds great to me, but it just doesn't have any of the latest features and I know I'm missing out on something. :)
