Hey all, I am looking to buy an amplifier to add to my HT

My current components are....

Pioneer VSX-49tx

Pioneer DV-47a

Pioneer PRO-510HD

Sony HD-100

Monster Power 5100

M&K S-150 Complete System (5.1)

I plan to use the 49tx as a pre-amp proc.

So far I have looked at Aragon 3005 and B&K 200.7.

I really dont want to spend more than $3000 but will listen to anything.

The amp needs to be 5 channel or 7 channel.

I dont know much about KRELL or Rotell or any other.

Thanks for help...

I agree, for HT the Bryston is a great deal. You can get a used 9BST (5 X 140) for $2400 at audiogon.

I owned a 9BST for a couple of years and thought it was a great amp. The Llano tube/ss hybrid amp I replaced it w/is significantly better to my ears. You can check them out at www.llanodesign.com I know that two channels is in your price range, not sure about five, you'll have to check.

Bryston makes fine amps but you can get great new amps for a lot less. Sherbourn 5 or 7 channel amp, Parasounds 2205 amp, Rotel 1095 and many others.

I just set up a client (with your speakers M&K 150) with the CineNova GRANDE 5 channel and he loves it. It is 600wpc (4 ohms) x 5 with .003% distortion and 112db S/N.

When you decide to go 7.1 just use 2 channels of the 49tx for the rear surrounds. (you could even vertically bi-amp using 4 channels of the 49TX)

The CineNova GRANDE into the 150s is said to sound better than the powered M&K 150s, and that is saying something.

I also have it powering my RM40s and it matches or exceeds most anything below $10,000

Best regards,

John

I have M&K 150s, and power them with a Sherbourn 5/1500a. I tried to buy a 9BST from the dealer, but he said the Sherbourn is just as good, and to my ears I belive him.

I would spend the difference elsewhere in your system.

The other amp I cam close to buying was a Pass X5, which is a very nice piece.

I have to agree with Chuck G on this one. Bryston makes terrific power amps, but they may not necessarily be the best value. Besides Parasound, Sherbourn and Rotel, you might also want to consider ATI, Outlaw and Adcom (which has recently come out with a new line of HT amps in various channel and power configurations).

Sunfire makes damn fine amps too. They crave low impedance loads. The Cinema Grand II (225x5) is under $3k. The Cinema 7 (225x7) is right aroud $3K. The Signature versions (425Wx5 or 425x7 @ 8 Ohms) are about $4k.

I like my original cinema grand (200x5) that I got from ebay for CHEAP. Awesome power, never gets above room temperature either. :D
