I'm looking to replace my old Sony (non-HDMI) receiver with something new.  I pretty much have it narrowed down to the following:

Sony STR-DN1040

Yamaha RX-A730

Onkyo TX-NR626

From what I've read all 3 of these have received some very good reviews.  The knock I have on the Sony is that my existing Sony could control two sets of speakers (I have a pair in my kitchen which I can listen to).

The Yamaha seems like a solid receiver but it doesn't have some of the bells and whistles (wifi primarily) that the Onkyo and Sony have.

My only knock on the Onkyo is that I do not have any personal experience with it.

Could anyone provide some extra thoughts on these or possibly other suggestions in that price range?

I'd get this Yamaha . I've owned my share of Onkyo Denon and Harman Kardon in years past. My last two AVRs have been Yamaha. My next AVR is probably going to be Yamaha. I have a Denon AVR in the bedroom - that may change soon. Care to guess which brand I'll be buying?

I personally like Denon due to Audyssey MultEQ XT which also applies EQ to the LFE channel, but Yamaha would be a close second.

Easy one for me. I would choose the Pioneer VSX-70 with a genuine aluminum faceplate and nearly every feature an HT fan could want. Since it isn't on the list I would choose the Yamaha. It has a better reputation for reliability than the other two.

Another vote for the Yamaha on that list. Also give the NAD T748V2 a serious look. Just barely makes your budget at the high end.

That may be my next AVR choice since I'm all but done with separates. Except for my HK990 of course! I take my 2 channel stuff seriously!

When the Yamaha V3900 dies many years from now a NAD might find its way into the audio rack.

If you are going to wait for that 3900 to die before you try that NAD you will possibly not get the NAD. I've used many Yamaha's and have never had one fail. As a matter of fact some of those are still in use by family members. The ones that family members aren't using were given to our church for use. I feel they are the most reliable electronic equipment made out there.

Well - for me electronics are like underwear - I don't wait for them to get dirty before changing them out!!!

Of your choices, I think you're making a great one. I don't know if you're familiar with HDMI-switching and hardware issues that have plagued Onkyo receivers over the past 3-4 years, but there have been MANY returns due to this, two of them mine. I had two of the same model mid-level Onkyo receiver and exactly 30 days after setup, both of them started blowing HDMI inputs. Afterward I assumed that that's why the Onkyo had so many HDMI inputs to begin with, so there would [hopefully] be some left after the fallout.   ;-)

Yamaha has a great reputation and I don't think anyone else mentioned here that they run cool. I could cook on the Onkyos so I really appreciate the fact that Yamaha runs cool.

I have a suggestion. If you haven't already purchased your AVR, you should REALLY talk to "jdsmoothie" on this forum. He's the number one poster here and he works for AVScience AND his prices are almost across the board better than you'll get anywhere else, sales or no sales. However, he can't quote prices online or in email so you should call him. He can also answer any technical questions you might have, before or after the sale. Extremely helpful.

Here's his info:

"JD" – AVScience Sales, 585-645-1006 or 877-823-4452 ext 103

Monday – Friday 9am – 9pm EST (weekends when on the forum or lv msg)

I'd look at Marantz as well.

If you can stretch your budget up $49, Amazon has the TX-NR818 on sale with Audyssey Multi-EQ XT32. Top of the line room correction with many more features for a little more cash! Was a significant upgrade for me over Muli-EQ. Enjoy!!!
