Hi all,

I am a newbie and would like to ask you experts for some advice on "Cheapest best bang for the buck reciever/speaker combo'' for a Home theater system. Could be HTIB though I have tried kenwood htb504 and was very disappointed.

I have read good reviews on denon 1801, 1802 for budget home theaters any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on how many bucks you have. OneCall has some good receiver/speaker package deals, starting at $752. You can switch out between receivers and speakers with a price adjustment. I recommend the H/K receivers if you can afford them. Try haggling for a break on shipping also. See the link.

It would be wise to blow the bank on speakers. A great sub will help a system immensely and then you can focus on smaller speakers. Also to keep the budget down stay with 5.1. I can guarantee that if you get a used receiver and some reasonable speakers and a good/great sub you will be very very happy. Just keep in mind that you do not want to upgrade speakers soon, between the mounting and what not it is best to get quality there. As for the receiver you can upgrade very easily. Good luck.

BTW, if there was any way to score on some NHT Superzeros still, it would be great at the recent blowout price they have a huge bang/buck ratio.

Outlaw Audio receiver they are $499 new direct from maker you may find them used at Audiogon.com for less.

Speakers are difficult to recommend because of personal likes and dislikes about sound quality. Klipsch makes decent speakers. You should visit several stores and listen to speakers in your price range buy the ones that sound best to your ears.

People have been pretty happy with the Pioneer 811 receiver at around the $300 price point. Now that the x12 versions are out, you may be able to find some differences.

The Energy Take 5 system (I think that's what they call it) maybe up your alley as far as speakers are concerned.

Bob,

Check out the community forum on www.**********, they just posted an update on the ELT.

Also, the Pioneer 912k is out, that may be a good 300-400 dollar receiver.

By the way, if you look at the weight of a receiver, it tells quite a bit about it. the best receivers are over 70lbs, the real good ones are over 40 lbs, the good ones are over 30lbs, the OK ones are over 20 lbs, and the cheap ones are less.... this is largely a measurement of how big a transformer they are using, which is an important factor .... Don't get me wrong, there are other important factors, but this is a fun little way to judge receivers besides looking at the specs :)

So, if you can find a used 30 lb receiver, that has the features you want, then it may be much better than, say an 18 lb new "entry level" receiver ...
