Looking to incorporate a 2.1 setup in a very big open floor plan. The speakers will be placed on built in wall shelves with a gap of 12 1/4" between them. I'd rather not put them on the top shelf so trying to find the best bang for the buck with what I have to work with. Budget is under $1000 for a pair. 80% tv and movie use, 20% music. Suggestions?

Your height constraints limit your choices which is good in one way; you'll be able to get a better single sub or two subs.

NHT C1 is sealed and fits your needs.

I know this is going to be tough as I’m also working with a fairly open floor plan. I suppose we could have the builder raise the top shelf on each side 1.5”-2” which would give us just enough space on the 2nd shelf for SVS piano black prime bookshelves or other options to fit....Thoughts?

P.s. These are pics of the display home, they haven’t broke ground for ours yet which is how I have time to figure things out

You don't have to raise the top shelf, just change out the fascia for a smaller aspect. I suspect they overhang about two inches ... something about the height of the fireplace brick would be good. Add another couple of inches to the speaker height and your possible options go way up (along with the quality).

It may be beneficial to note you can turn any “too tall” bookshelves on their side to fit.

Since you aren’t doing critical listening and your room is far from optimal, I doubt you’d hear a difference, except for the improvement in quality in which a larger bookshelf turned on its side may bring :)

A small rear ported speaker would work best in 2.1 if you bought a receiver with bass management to eliminate frequencies below 80hz or so; there are several stereo receivers in the $500 range that have this capability or you could opt for a cheaper AVR.

if u r handy... DIYSoundgroup.com volt 6 or 8. since it is co-axial, laying on its side is no issue. build a screen out of grill cloth that covers the shelf cavity, so you dont even see the speaker. the volt is high sensitivity and high power. lots of output.

RSLs are front ported you could put 2 x CG23s horizontally, CG3s or CG5s could be placed vertically. All at slightly different price points with a 30 day trial. I like my CG23s they have a good sound stage and fill up a bigger room.
