Hi Mercian, welcome to the forum
Everyone's budget is different - what's yours?
Then you'll get more people chime in with their suggestions.
Acceptable quality vs. affordability?
Happy hunting, and remember - there's always bigger, better gear out there, so look more into what features you'll need and the reviews for that item...look at both individual reviews as well as techie website reviews (i.e., Tom's Hardware, ZDNet, TechTV, CNET, Amazon, epinions, here, etc.)
Some primary things for A/V gear:
1) Dolby PL II/DTS/Dolby 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1
2) Receiver watts output - I'd say at least 600 watts
3) Receiver has good input/output connectivity - S-Video, Component, possibly DVI, maybe even VGA (at least 2 component inputs, 3+ would be good).
