Best Carada Screen for better black levels?

1251 Views 14 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  vtgt
I'm not really sure what effects what. Should I go for brilliant white and the extra gain creates perceived better blacks or should I go for high contrast gray as it's darker by it's very nature?

For a reference point I have a Z4 and completely light controlled room.

If there's any other info that helps in this kind of decision, lemme know and I'll try to get the answer. Thanks!

Well, I know I'm new here, but in a completely light controlled room, I think a white screen looks best all around. It may not give you as deep black levels as the gray but if you control all the light, you shouldn't need it. I vote for Brilliant White.
Also, I had a few concerns based on this review from Projector Central...

Is there truth in what they're saying?

Would it be better to go with goo?
The Classic Cinema White (CCW) screen material is known to be thinner than ther BW, thereby letting some light pass thru. I agree about going BW route, since your room is light controlled. I got the Precison 118" in Brilliant White and couldn't be happier with my Panny 900.

I will second the BW. The screen is awesome and my blacks are good. I have a 110" w/ my Panny 900. Email Carada if you have questions they are a lot of help. Also read the reviews on rate this dealer the projector central site.
I have a similar setup with a dedicated room, total light control, and a Z3 with a 110" BW screen. I am very pleased with the result and have never second guessed my choice to go with the BW.
Has anyone here seen a side-to-side comparison of the BW with a Dalite HighPower? They seem similar, i.e., high gain white screens, that achieve good (relative) black levels because of their brightness. Curious as to how they compare.
perfomance is similar. I am sure that some w/ more discerning eyes than me could point out the subtle differences. As far as construction and asthetics looking at the two side by side without a picture on them - carada wins hands down. Of course as a new carada owner I am probably a bit biased. :)
I just received my Carada screen yesterday! I purchased a 1.78:1 110†Precision Brilliant White screen. The Criterion frame looks much nicer, but I couldn’t afford it…

Comparing the screen samples I received from Carada, the Brilliant White sample is a much more robust product than the Cinema White sample. Honestly, I was actually quite disappointed with the Cinema White sample. The material is very thin and semi-translucent (as mentioned on Projector Central). It reminded me of a cheap white shower curtain. The High Contrast Gray sample was also robust but very dark. It was not suitable for my application.

At the time of the review on Projector Central, I don’t think Carada sold their Brilliant White screens.

Carada will gladly send you some screen samples if you ask them. Their email address is [email protected] . My samples were delivered in less than 5 days.

Do you have any idea of how the BW compares to the HP with regard to dealing with ambient light? The gain of the HP is quoted as 2.8 (and has been measured at ~ 3.0), and thus has a much narrower viewing angle; this is reported to help a great deal with rejecting ambient light (especially from the side, for which the gain to the viewer would be

How does the Carada BW surface compare to the StudioTek130 on issues other than PRICE?
IIRC, the Studiotek 130 and the Carada BW material were nearly identical and very color accurate from the reviews of those that saw them side to side - with a slight edge going to the Studiotek. That's why I specifically bought the BW material.

The viewing cone is very wide on the BW so the ambient light rejection is not as good as a screen with higher gain and narrow viewing cone, like my Optoma Graywolf. I have decent light control so I prefer the wide viewing cone of the BW material.
if you want a white screen i thought the cararada was good until i saw the studiotek was definitely better . as far as price difference you have to make up your mind if the difference is worth it
I did a lot of research and finally I bought Criterion 118' BW Carada for my Pany 900. I have a dedicated room with light controlled. The screen is perfect and I am pretty happy with Carada.
