I have a HTPC connected to Pioneer 1523 receiver and projector in my theater room. I'm looking for a small cheap monitor solution that I can use to hook up to the HTPC (or as a second out from the receiver) so I can use the htpc to play music and do other things without having to run my projector. Any suggestions? Thought about going down to goodwill and getting something used but I play a lot of blurays with the htpc and am concerned that the player may not like having a non hdmi monitor connected. unplugging the monitor everytime i play a bluray is not an option. I also am looking for something small since it will only see occasional use. Also at the end of setup, the only thing i want to have to do to use one or the other is turn them on and off--i.e. no fiddling with windows resolution sizes to be able to read things, etc. Also, in the event someone has both on at the same time, I don't want it to affect bluray playback. My htpc uses a radeon 7790 vid card and an i5 cpu.

Would something like this work?

http://www.amazon.com/Lilliput-Um-70-Monitor-non-touch-Screen/dp/B000AYHY7I/ref=sr_1_32?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1392315035&sr=1-32&keywords=hdmi+monitor

Is there anything cheaper?

Thanks,

For the least inconvenience, you need to get a display which supports HDCP and is the same resolution as your projector -- presumably that's 1920x1080 (aka 1080p). I don't see any resolution specs on the page you reference, but most of the cheap, small TVs are only 1280x720 (aka 720p). When display devices are mis-matched, the source devices usually down-grade the video to match that of the least capable display. Just turning a TV off (i.e.putting it into standby) doesn't make any difference because its EDID is still readable.

Sorry, I don't have any particular device to recommend, but you might want to consider browsing at a nearby large retailer, like Walmart, Best Buy or Target. Alternatively, good prices often are available at the wholesale resellers like BJ's, CostCo, Sam's Club, etc.

Refresh rate is pretty much as important as resolution. I always have to skirt around 24Hz with my computer monitor. I really wish it supported it and for me I'd be willing to pay a decent amount more for it... I ended up mounting mine in the built-in shelves at the back of the room. My NUC has dual HDMI outputs as does the receiver so I have all kinds of options but 24Hz always seems to bite me at some point..

24hz... definitely something id like to try but not sure if my projector can do it. it's an epson powerlite 705. 720p. i just upgraded receivers. will probably upgrade projector when 4k becomes cheap.

comments about matching resolution helpful too. my htpc has 1hdmi and 2 dvi outs. not sure if the 1523 receiver can output the same signal to multiple monitors/projectors.

According to its manual, the Pioneer 1523 has 3 HDMI outputs. Two are intended to send the same signal to two displays. E.g. simultaneously or alternately to a TV and a projector: exactly your situation. The third is for sending any of the HDMI input signals to a third display.

The projector's manual makes no mention of 24fps or film frame rate, so I suspect it does not support it.
