Best choice for Blu-ray player - now

4509 Views 45 Replies 34 Participants Last post by  Trackman
I'm in the market for a Blu-Ray player and trying to decide between a PS3, Samsung BD-P1200 and Panasonic DMP-BD10A. I know that BD 1.1 is coming out later in the year but I'm looking to get a player now. I have no need for the PS3 as a game player but would use it only as a Blu-Ray player if that was the best choice. I'm looking for the best HD picture and audio quality for the money. All 3 are within the same price range. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Potentially you will get BD 1.1 with the PS3 with a firmware upgrade at a later date.

It also depends on your A/V receiver as well - do you have an HDMI receiver? The PS3 only outputs audio via digital optical & HDMI, so you need an HDMI receiver to enjoy multi-channel PCM tracks on many BD titles. The Sammy & Panasonic also have analog outputs that are good for older receivers, like mine.

And for "all 3 in the same price range" - the 5 free movie bundle with the Panasonic is worth $120 - $150 if those titles appeal to you & you would buy them. And I assume you talking retail? There's quite a glut of PS3's on eBay (buyer beware - a lot of scams, too), and I recently purchased my 20GB PS3 new, sealed in box, for $410 on eBay. But as my receiver doesn't have HDMI, I'm watching for the street price of the BD10a as well.

My A/V receiver has HDMI for the video but I need to use analog or digital for the audio as it won't handle audio via HDMI.

Seems like the PS3 might be the best bet for potentially getting 1.1 compatibility.
I think either one of those players would work. I personally like the DMP-BD10A that is coming out, my eye is on that one!
I am a PS3 owner, don't forget the hd trailers from the PS store and music and video stored on a local drive.

It is a bonus (If you don't have an HTPC)

That added functionality is used frequently at my house. (well, I use the tivo for music, but trailers and local videos are used often)
For what's available right now, I think the Samsung 1200 is an excellent choice. The upcoming Panasonic sounds promising and the PS3 seems to do well a Blu-Ray player.
Today: PS3 or Samsung 1200. The Samsung 1000 is fine if it turns up really cheaply. I have a Samsung 1000 and also a PS3.

In a few weeks: Panasonic DMP-DB10A. I have used the previous version and it is great. The new one is basically just a rebadge with a much better price.

Excellent but overpriced and underfeatured (no CD or advanced audio support): the Pioneer HD1.
Right now I'd go for the PS3. I've had one now for a couple weeks and it's terrific.
Well I seen the Samsung 1200 in action and must say it is a very nice BD player and is excellent with SD content. I would recommend it over the PS3 and I own a PS3. Haven't seen the Panny yet so won't comment.

I just bought the Sammy 1200. I must say I am really happy with this unit. The load and unload time is WAY faster than My Tosh A1. The Reon chip makes my SD DVDs look even better than my A1 ( didn't know that was possible) plus it will play CDs.

So if you want a player that will make your SD DVDs look AMAZING, have really quick load times and play CDs this might be your player. They can be found for around 650$
His receiver can't do audio over HDMI, and some of you are still pushing the PS3?

You need analog outputs! Don't buy a PS3 unless you plan to upgrade your receiver. If the 1.1 spec really means that much to you, wait for a player that meets it. Don't buy the PS3 and hope, especially since you couldn't even enjoy lossless audio.

If, like most of us, the 1.1 spec isn't a big deal, get a standalone with analog outputs. If it matters to you, wait for a 1.1 compliant player.
I agree with speeeedy,

The Samsung 1200 looks to be awesome if you want a great upconverting DVD player along with BD playback. Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is one hell of a BD player but playback of SD DVD's isn't great (hopefully we'll see upscaling soon). If I didn't own my Toshiba HD-XA2 I'd jump all over the 1200.
Anyone who experiences HD trailer downloads will not think of any other Blu-Ray player unless you have other means to experience HD trailers. Just so cool. With the sequence play expected in later upgrades, it will be like watch the trailers you want in order before th movie kicks in.

I love this feature as most of the time I wait in theater for family to join me. So, I enjoy trailers or some demo games which to me are as good as real games as I am no gamer.

Even with the background downloading I spent more time downloading trailers than I ever did watching them and if I remember correctly the audio was weak on most if not all of them. The game demos were great as they saved me from buying games I wouldn't play and as such didn't leave any reasons to use the PS3 so I sold it for a stand-alone.
Re the analogs, do either the 1200 or the Panny have issues with bass management like the XA-2 does? My genral impression is that they don't but I haven't spent lots of time rereading threads in that regard.

faster transport helps ps3 too, to stay ahead of competetors, I would still like to hear from owners of XA2, SAMSUNG 1200, PS3 for relative load times

The Samsung 1200 is very fast in my opinion. I can't imagine that anyone would have any complaints with its load times.

I have a PS3 and an XA2. While the load/initial boot times of the XA2 show a big improvement over the ones of the A1 (which I used to own), I still find the PS3 to be faster.

I don't think any of my SD DVD players are faster than the PS3.
