Best DIY for 0-$300, $300-$500 for theater room

Most the threads I found were older. Looking to re-open this topic, as I'm seriously considering a build. I'd like some adjustment options and looking to get the most bang/ boom for my buck. Given my lack of design understanding I think a pre-fab kit or box may be best? As far as pre-made subs I like what I've read on HSU research and would go with them if I didn't do the DIY route. Opinions? Thanks in advance.
