Best is subjective. I use Theatertek but you could use zoomplayer, MPC, or fancier stuff like Meedio. You may need to install codecs to decode the mkv files (haali, ffdshow, ac3filter).


A NAS should stream fine over a 100mbit or gigabit connect.

it seems like no frontend is perfect, I went back to using Vista media center after playing with a few others. Just get the cccp codec for windows media player and you will be fine with playing any format.


As far as streaming 1080p, you can do it but I would suggest a wired connection, any kind of wireless is going to have some stutter at times due to the bandwidth and latency of wireless networks.

I've been a long time MediaPortal user, but I always found it slow and resource hogging. I can't really reccommend it.


Now I've switched to XBMC and I couldn't be happier! The front-end looks amazing, it's very smooth, automatically downloads Movie and TV series information, and can be customized to your liking.


So... XBMC!!

like many i have tried others but always come back to vista because... it works the best.


and there is a few plugins that i like.
