Best Internet Direct HT Setup (~$2K)

4150 Views 36 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  thirdeye11
I'm looking for opinions on speakers I can get online. I want a 5.1 setup and have been checking out Aperion and Axiom so far.

I am considering picking up a subwoofer from HSU or SVS or Outlaw if it would be a significant improvement ove rthe ones from Axiom/Aperion etc.

My budget is around $2000 USD - perhaps a bit more if the sub is $$$. I prefer floorstanding speakers and I don't know if I should prefer dipoles or monopole surrounds.

My receiver is an Onkyo 705 and I will be mostly using this for moves/tv/gaming - probably at least 80% of the time.

Thanks in advance for your advice. I am not terribly picky - my ear isn't what some claim theirs is - and my current setup is TV speaker ... so anything nice would be a huge leap.

I know the gurus here have sagely advice - so I'm bumping in anticipation.

Thanks guys!
Bic Acoustech has an incredible package deal for $800. They make very nice speakers.

You can put a nice SVS or Aperion speaker package together with your budget. I'm not a big fan of ID but the Aperions and Hsu systems sounded very good at the Home Entertainment show. I've never heard the SVS but they seem to have a good following.
Pretty much identical requirements to mine, similar budget too.

Aperior, Axiom, av123 are the ones I've been most interested in.
Aperion has the best return policy, and probably the most solid reviews.

Aperion Intimus 533 Cinema HD is a great system for less than $2K.

You can order it, audition for 30 days, and if you don't like it return with Aperion paying freight back. Very few do this.
I've been with Axiom now for about 5 years, and have owned a 5.1, 7.1, and soon to be 7.3 setup. I highly recommend these speakers for being one of the best bang for the buck brands around.

Your best bet is to try to audition the brands your considering. Most speaker companies have their own forum with an audition list of people all over willing to let you have a listen. That is what sold me on Axiom.

Sorry, can't comment on Aperion.

Good Luck in your adventure....

Nice as it sounds I won't be auditioning them most likely. I need to blast this one through while the wife is weak and pregnant!!

One other note - the speakers have to come in cherry or redwood or it's a no-sale!

What doe you guys who have heard the Aperions and Axioms think of the matching subs? Pretty good? Or would it be best to buy an HSU or SVS?

I noticed Aperion and Axiom as a lot for their subs and for the same $$$ you can get some high end offerings from SVS and HSU.

Any opinions?

Thanks so far!

That is how I bought one of my cars, know exactly what you want to do...

Aperion and Axiom both make excellent matching subs. Aperion's sub is very good, and I have heard it, but from what I've read Axiom gets mixed reviews for their speakers, but always solid reviews for their subs.

I have Aperion, the 532 Cinema. Happy as a pig in poop.
I have the SVS SCS-01M (modified centers as Left and Rights) with the SCS center and 4 SBS-01s as surrounds, I have the PB12nsd for my sub. This system is awesome in everyway. I have a 110" DIY laminate screen and an Epson HC 1080p projector and the speakers are exactly right sized for the large picture. I LOVE THEM IN EVERYWAY a man can love his speakers (WOW that sounds sick...
).

I have had numerous friends over that have extensive hobbies and careers in AV and their own home recording studios. They have done nothing but rave. The best comment from a pro was how well the center and conversation held up while lots of special effect sounds going off all around.

I don't think you could go wrong.

Mine are driven by the Pioneer Elite 94.

Those don't come in cherry or rosewood. I'd recommend either the Rocket RS450s or RS760s for fronts:

the RSC-200 center, and the RSC-250 surrounds.

OOpppsss, missed that in post 11.
Hi Industrial,

I would strongly recommend you audition any pair of speakers, especially if your going to drop around 2000$. Personally I have heard several speakers and to me at least the Energy's seem to produce the crispest sound I have heard. You could get RC30's for the fronts, 350$ a piece, RC10's for the surrounds or RC-R's and then the RC-LCR for the main. This would keep you right under 2000$ then later get an HSU sub, best rated by Audiophile magazine last month. This set up is sick and you will experience music and videos like never before, the amount of detail you will pick up is truly amazing.

If you want something more high end take a look at Monitor Audio's GS line, you will be amazed. Either way consider getting an amp if you don't already have one to power your speakers in addition to your receiver, since most high end speakers require 200 watt RMS, so you want to make sure you get the most out of them. Good Luck
Keep an eye on the Rockets and their MFW 15. MFW received great ratings on the last sub shoot out and it is a very affordable sub. Just go to the sub forum and look search for MFW 15. I can not believe how beautiful these rockets are. Truly amazing work of art. Great speakers as well. Only bad thing is they are backed order and you might have to wait a little longer than the other IDs.
I was one of the few who returned the Aperions. I found them to be very good for HT but harsh for music. I must say though that the customer service is fantastic and the 30-day audition is unmatched. I ended up buying Swan Divas which I like a lot.

You may want to consider the Swan and/or Dana lines at theaudioinsider. AV123 also has some very good speakers. Their new x-statik line and mid range rocket models are within your range. Both companies btw are excellent at customer service.

Edit:

Here is something I found on another thread posted by a different member: Nickmont says in http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=995639

As far the the Aperions go, here's the response I rec'd:

"The 5T will be launching in mid-March and is available for pre-order now. The new 5T will feature a new tweeter that has better power handling so it won't distort at high volumes, a new fiberglass weave woofer that is both lightweight and rigid, a newly designed cabinet that improves on our already great looking tower, and finally the speaker has been re-voiced to give it an even fuller and more open sound than the current model. As the drivers are higher quality the new tower will be priced slightly higher at $495 each. As the tower really is an improvement over the 533-T we believe it is still an amazing value."

I think the APerion guys seem to be aware of the harshness problem with their tweeter.
