2255 Views 30 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  MrMike6by9
I'm Sorry, comparred to all of you guys I am a complete noob in terms of whats good and whats not but I need help. I have recently decided that it was time for me to purchase a new Set. I have never owned HDTV before but recently aquired an XBox 360 and now HDTV is a must.

I completly feel in love with the Samsung 6167W DLP....Then I came here and read all the bad stuff about DLP and gaming. I have seriously tried digging around all kinds of forums and threads in this forum to get a clue to whats hot, but it seems that everybody has their own opinion.

Basically I need a TV, that looks awsome for regular TV watching as well as games. I want the display as large as possible. 720p is cool with me. My price range is to stay at or under $2500. Please help.....Please.

Maybe some input on this model: Sony Grand WEGA KDF-60WF655 60" LCD Projection TV

Thanks for your help, Sorry Im soooooo non-educated on this.

50inch Sony LCD RP A10 model will suit your gaming needs just fine.. I have the 42inch model.. Games are a blast..

Well I do like that model, but I am interested in the 55" or 60" RP LCD Sony instead. Is the picture quality different, and would the 60" still be good for gamming?

I notice that the 55 and 60 inch models do not have VGA input, which is a bit of a bummer, but I suppose I could convert VGA to HDMI with a converter if I ever wanted to use the TV as a computer display huh?

I only suggested the 50inch model cause it retails for 2,500.. The 55inch sells for 3,000.. The 60inch, I'm not sure.. & yes, 60's is great for gaming.. Picture quality is the same. What is your viewing distance going to be like? I was told that you can't get a picture when you hook up your comp via HDMI.. I tried DVI to HDMI & got a blank picture..
Are you talking about the 55-60A10 (or 20) models.. Or last yrs 655 models? If so, I heard the newer A10 models have a improved picture..
Playing Halo2 On the 50" SXRD is Amazing
I'm talking about the A20 models. On pricegrabber...which I know were supposed to tal MSRP here...but anyway on pricegrabber, the 60" A20 goes for 2,590 or something like that. I could stretch $100 for 10 extra inches. So would the 60" A20 be a good choice, and would my xbox 360 look stunning using component HD cables?

Sorry for all the questions, but since Im here I might as well ask...How often should I expect to have to replace the bulb? Another issue is some larger TV's have that glossy crap face to them that reflects everything. Does this TV have that...and how can I tell for future referance. I am really interested in the 60 Inch...would I be making the right choice?

This is it: Sony WEGA KDF-E60A20 60" LCD Projection TV
My Mits WD-62927 works wonderful for my regular XBOX and my HTPC....games are incredible, now if I could just score a 360 everything would be great.

Take a look at JVC HD-61Z886 720p LCOS rear projection. Should fit nicely in your budget and do all you want.
Ok the JVC looks nice and I have heard good stuff about the LCOS.

My questions: Is JVC knowen to be a good brand? Any idea how much replacement lamps would cost for this model, is there a glossy screen on front (I hate those things), and Would there be any video lag with video games?

JVC has a reasonable reputation. Lamps about $200 to $250. Matt screen and NO lag in video games.

If you want to spend MORE money. JVC has also just released a new 1080p series.
The Samsung HLR5087W 50 inch DLP has no gaming lag issues and plays all games perfect with component and HDMi from my POC. Playing FPS's on the TV online in widescreen gives me a huge advantage...

ppl have complained about lag with Samsung/JVC DLP/LCOS displays.. No one has experienced any lag with the Sony A10 A20..
The lag I've heard people talk about has usually been from a source that is lower resolution than the TV's native resolution.....for example PS2 at 480i and Xbox at 480p.....I don't think anyone has said anything about lag on the Xbox 360 since it outputs 720p and 1080i. Either way, the Sony A10 hasn't experienced lag no matter what the output is.

I was actually going to get the Samsung 46inch DLP, but was scared away with all the Samsung DLP complaints, lip sync problems, laging/smearing, etc.. So I went with the Sony.. The Samsung is probally better for watching movies, but I doubt it would have been as good for gaming..
I have a Samsung HL-R5067W and have noticed slight lag in games.... not to the point where it is unbearable though, if people consider the lag unbearable either they have a worse lag or they are just anal and like to complain. I noticed the lag the most when playing baseball, where timing is important to throw a pitch "perfect" on the pitch meter, and also with the hitting. But after a few innings I was able to adjust my timing for pitching, and hitting, well it has added a new dimension of difficulty, because I have not been winning 20-5 anymore ;) .

I'm not aware of any complaints about game lag on JVC 720p LCOS. Do you have a link to these comments?

If you search... many people have commented on suitability of the JVC 720p for gaming... citing lag as a non-issue.
hmmm, so Im still stuck between the two. It's either the Sony 60A20 or the JVC HD-61Z886 720p LCOS. The sony is a bit more, and I am pricing these on pricegrabber....The dealer selling the sony has a lower rating than the 5 star JVC dealer I was looking at so I'm still kinda stuck. I have also read that the JVC could have a problem with burning out a lamp every 3-4 months.

I need to throw one more critical question into the mix though. Please consider this in your recomendations. Will Digital cable or Directv (non-HD) look really good on these sets?

Thank you all so far for all the help, I hope I can get to the bottom of this quest to find the perfect TV.
Sorry, but non-HD will not look "really good" on any HDTV.
Yes SD does not look teriffic on most 720p sets. It's OK but not as good as your fathers CRT.

The newer 1080p's in particular Sony SXRD and JVC HD-ILA do an acceptable job with SD.
