So I was thinking of getting a toshiba regza 47", but cnet says its standard def viewing is poor, and I'm worried about that. I do not have hdtv, and probably won't for a while, but I do want a nice lcd. Should I go with a smaller size? And what brands are the ultimate best for standard def, and what size would be ideal? (i want to get minimum 40 inches, max 46).

I have comcast cable btw too.

With Comcast you should at least get the major networks in HD, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and CW.

My Sony 52W4100 does a great job at displaying SD and other owners have commented that the Bravia engine gives the Sony the edge in this dept.

I will also say that my entry-level LG 42" PG25 plasma does a good job with SD programming as well.

In my home, my Samsung LN40B550 LCD comes in third with SD programming.
