Working on pricing out a basement theater build and have decided on going with LCR in walls behind AT screen. This is primary HT only , maybe some music but for sure 90/10. I have gone to Magnolia showroom and they had BW and MartinLogan (at least just the LR setup). I wasn’t blown away or anything.

I’m intrigued by the Monolith series due to be released next month , but again , I’d be reliant on early reviews. Also saw JBL had some in walls as well that seemed to have good reviews.

I do plan on getting 2 monolith 12” subs. Also 4 ceiling speakers for Atmos setup if that helps.

Budget would be helpful. How large is your basement. Lots of options and the best part is you can put three identical speakers behind the AT screen which is optimal.

JBL 590's go on sale now and then for 450-500 each which is a great deal.
PowerSoundAudio 110's or 210's would be great but more expensive
JTR's are awesome but come with an awesomely high price.

Then there is the DIY route. DIYSoundgroup has some fantastic kits that can be had for great pricing. HT or HTM series are the ones to looks.

Sadly none of these are in walls :p

OP, Revel, Kef, and JBL Synthesis make the best in walls currently. I’d say even Klipsch as they have some THX tagged stuff also.

Make sure you can find a dealer to give you a discount on any of these also. That’ll save you a lot of money.

I’d also look at going with 15” subs instead.

Funny enough, those were the top two I was thinking , JBL 590 and PSA 110. Sadly, I don’t think I can make it work with a false wall as it would reduce my viewing area to 11-12’. I’m at 14’ now with a 120” screen.

My room is pretty wide open 24x28x8 and my “viewing area” is 12x15x8 but partially surrounded by a half wall.

I’d like to keep the budget around $4,000 for speakers and sub(s).

Hey DF,

Not sure what your exact plan is, but you can't mix Atmos and surrounds in the ceiling. The "Speaker Level" channels should stay near ear level and the Atmos channels should be in the ceiling.

I had a consult with Magnolia just to discuss speaker placement for Atmos. Front LCR, ceiling speakers just above main listening area and rear ceiling 4 ft behind listening area with angled tweeters (also suggested moving them an additional one foot out from the other ceiling speakers). They said it was good? Are they wrong?

I'd do the false wall and accept sitting a little closer in exchange for enjoying MUCH BETTER sound that will COST A LOT LESS (instead of $4K for speakers/subs you could easily spend just $2000-2500), and you can easily take your investment with you if you ever move.

And according to the Viewing Distance Calculator here, for a 120" screen their "THX Recommended Viewing Distance" is 12.3 feet.

PS. As others have noted, if doing Atmos you do NOT want all the other speakers to also be in-ceiling, that pretty much destroys the whole POINT of Atmos.

In fact, you do not want the critical front 3 (LCR) to be in-ceiling AT ALL, *EVER*---it seems like those BB Magnolia lunks are getting ever more ignorant/idiotic by the day.
