Hi all. I'm looking for a sub that really digs deep for under $500. I already have an Earthquake S12 that does an ok job for music and HT, but I want a sub that will compliment the Earthquake by going lower. The new sub will be designated primarily to LFE duty. I have a large space currently, but may move into an apartment soon so I don't want to go overkill on a sub for an apartment, but would still like to have the LFE while still in my current large space.

Room measures 14x18, catherdral ceiling, with an opening on rear wall to another large space, so I think I'll have to forget about pressurizing the room and place the LFE sub near the seating location, currently 15 feet from the TV.

I would consider DIY kits if alll I have to do is put the sub togther, everything is already cut and drilled etc.

Thanks in advance for your time and suggetions.

If you don't mind the finish and B stock, MFW-15 for 399 plus shipping from the manufacturer. That's probably as deep as you can go for around $500.

Link.

Don't the MFW-15's have a lot of problems? Bad amps and drivers?

Not sure on that ... I thought those issues were fixed early of '09. I guess it depends on who you ask. Some people have had theirs since day 1 with not a problem and others have had issues. Maybe give them a call? At 399 it sounds like it might be worth trying. Also, from what I've read, any issues were quickly fixed under warranty.

Good luck!

If anybody wants to buy an MFW-15 sub, go for it. But the above statements are not accurate. Do a search for MFW-15 on this site and you will see a current poll that is running right now. Over half of all respondants that have purchased this sub, both old and new, have had issues. That's a greater than 50% chance that your sub will arrive with an issue that YOU will need to fix. They send the parts but you do the work. Also there are a fair amount of respondants that have issues that have never been resolved. Just make sure you know the facts before you buy one of these. If your buying one as a DIY project, that's a different story.

Digging deep and under 500 don't go together very often. Increase your budget by just a little bit and you can get something like the Elemental Designs A3-300, Hsu VTF2, or the Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus.

I think shadyj gave you some good advice there, those three subs a3-300, hsu vtf2, and the LFM-1 Plus, are all great choices for

Yeah, the MFW sounds great for the price, but the possible issues with it are something I just don't want to deal with. Thanks for that suggestion though. It was a contender until I did the research on it.

Thanks for the offer but I don't like buying used electronics, especially sight unseen.

You can always do this over ebay/paypal (they offer all sorts of protections) if you're feeling sketched out.

Ebay - Paypal protection not all its made out to be. I got robbed of $300 on there a few years back. I paid but never received my purchase. I filed a dispute and guess what.......I won...but still never got my money back. Apparently someone opened an account with all fake information and scammed several of us. The dispute results were something like..." Congratulations we have resolved your dispute and determined that your claim is valid, however the seller does not have a valid account for us to recover your funds from. We will imediately shut down the sellers account and continue to try to recover funds and will let you know if we do" or something similar to that. Based on that, I still have a hard time buying stuff from them unless its a power seller. People with 100% feedback but only 6-8 transactions... watch out.

for the record...

i'm no thief...just an enthusiast, like the rest of you (with a case of upgradeitis, like the rest of you...hence the sub sale). got taken once, and it sucked. wouldn't dream of doing it to another. my feedback is ~400 on ebay, but mostly related to my other vice (high end bicycles).

As I pointed out in that other thread, I think that you are a little bit confused about the LFE channel.

How do you propose dedicating this sub "primarily to LFE duty"?

Um, I think you and I sort of said the same thing ...

I appreciate the offer dookie1 but I was burned once. I won't let it happen again. If you were closer I'd come by for a demo, but you're not so thanks but no thanks.

For the record, I will say dookie's LFM-1 EX is a great deal, and the only reasonI did not go for it is psychological - I am paranoid about shipping damage, and the wholeprocess of dispute resolution, it is hard enough with large companies. That's why I went ahead and paid more to get a new LFM-1 plus. I would have done it if it was a local sale where I could see it and pick it up - in my opinion subs are better suited for sale in the local market.
