Best Little Basement in Texas - Build Thread

10 years ago, I was excited to find a house with a good size basement, a rare thing in Texas.
Then, I got sidetracked with kids and work.
But, after Snowmageddon 2021 and associated damage (busted pipe), it's time to fix it up nice.

17' W x 29.5' L x 12' H
(500 sq ft, 6,000 cu ft)

Room design by Erskine Group and construction by Heartwood, although I'm doing the equipment and calibration.
That's not typical of how the Erskine Group works, which doesn't make the most of their expertise.
For me, playing with the toys is half the point, and I couldn't bear to let them have all the fun.
The final product will be equal parts my playroom and my family's home theater.
I'm very excited for both. 😁

Planned power is roughly 10kw, so doing 5x 20A circuits. That heavy gray cable is a high voltage line that will go to a dedicated transformer and breaker panel. That's partly to make the long cable run between floors easier, and partly to be flexible for future expansion. It will be trivial to add new circuits by the rack if I need them. I forgot how much power the high voltage line can handle, but plenty.

Edit: Looks like they did 10x 20A circuits. Why not, with a dedicated breaker panel?

That's actually just insulation and existed prior to the remodel. All four walls are exterior walls, with earth on the other side of two of them, since the house is built on a slope. The ceiling connects to the master bedroom, though, which drove my wife crazy. There was a strong, droning rumble up there from the subs. The remodel includes a soundproof construction, so that should be minimized, in addition to other benefits (low noise floor, happy neighbors.) The ductwork will be removed, since the current ductwork would compromise the soundproofing.

4 stools behind a bar top for an overflow third row

The 11 is for an extra pair of side surrounds for the back 2 rows.
My 16 ch processor will be outputting 9.3.4, so I'm planning on running sides, rears, subs, and actuators through a MiniDSP 10x10 to help manage details.

So I take it that you are planning to split the SURROUND L/R, and use the 1 set to the amp for the second row, and drop the 2nd set into the MiniDSP, time delay the first row, and count on the Haas effect? So during your calibration, you will be using the 2nd row set of speakers only, and disconnect the 1st row from outputting? IS that how you are planning to connect it? If so... please keep reading.

I too was going to do something of this early on, and @Mashie Saldana , @Nalleh , and others convinced me otherwise. Hence I have the 2 rows of speakers, but 2 AVR's as well to address this exact scenario.
Now days, with all the technical advancements, it's not as simple as just splitting outputs and connecting up more amps to get the sound quality expected. Frequency Responses, Time shifts, and appropriate acoustic changes and compensations made are all considered in todays AVR's to address several short comings of the consumer room. Though you will get audio from those base layer channels, please set you expecatations accordingly when performing such 'trickery' as it were.

Yes, I'm familiar with the precedence, comb filtering, EQ, group delay, and positional audio problems.

I'm planning on routing sides and rears into the MiniDSP 10x10, and routing the rear six speakers out of the MiniDSP.
I wish my processor had native support for extra side surround channels, but short of that, the MiniDSP gives me lots of flexibility for routing, gain, delay, EQ, and disabling speakers if needed.
I'm planning on using different calibration presets and MiniDSP presets for different room usage (one row, both rows, etc.)
I think I'll be able to find something that works well, with lots of care.
That will definitely be a very tricky aspect of the setup.
