I'm looking to upgrade my Sharp front projector (250 lumens 500 lines 4x3) and still maintain a 7' diagonal picture from a paltry 11 feet viewing distance. I know I am far too close to the screen, yes I do have some "screen door effect", but that's the deal and I'm sticking with it. So, what new or used projectors would you suggest that have the following:

1) Good blacks (ie contrast ability)

2) Minimal screen door effect.

3) Sharp picture

4) All the above for under 3,000 US.

5) A visit from the men in the white coats because I must

be out off my mind to think 1 - 4 is possible!

Well since nobody else has stated the obvious yet, I will...

Check out the NEC LT150 DLP. It throws a 100" (8.3') diag image from 130" (10.9') back. It doesn't have a zoom so you may have to move it forward a bit to fit the 7' screen.

1) 800:1 contrast ratio (possibly a conservative rating)

2) DLP has much less screen door than LCD.

3) XGA resolution (1024x768) and HDTV compatibility. Very sharp picture.

4) Currently available for under $2400 from any number of online dealers.

5) Shhh... dont tell them I have one. They seem to have overlooked me.

The only downsides are if you can see the rainbow effect and are annoyed by it, I'd look elsewhere. And the lack of zoom. But there isn't much that'll give you the throw ratio you want along with your other requirements.

There are enough LT150 owners on here now that there may be someone nearby who can offer a demo.

Dave, the rainbow effect you refer to, exactly what is that? Do you mean colors smear in fast moving scenes ?
