I'm trying to get a gauge on what option would be best suited for a commercial space. The space is a suburban emergency department with 12 rooms each with it's own TV. All the TVs have an RG6 cable fed from a central location. If the end goal is for all rooms to have access to the same media simultaneously (think hotels that have movies on demand), what setup can best accomplish this? Can a media server perform this feature? Any advice on setup? The building and wiring are already completed. Thanks for helping point me in the right direction.

define Media?

what exactly do you want to do? the same media to all rooms at the same time? ie plop in 1 dvd and have all 12 TV's play the same movie? just use a distribution amp...

do you mean FTA/OTA TV? a sageTV server and 12 ethernet to rg6 baluns/converters, and 12 sage HD extenders would be good, plus you get the benefit of a PVR in each room...

you want HBO and the like, then you need an actual Hotel type setup, and more important, the $$$ content fees that hotels pay...

maybe Kaleidescape for DVD's, but I doubt even that is legal...

if you don't care about following unjust and insane laws, then the Sage setup will do everything, HBO, DVD, Blu-ray, music,etc...

note: while Sage is perfectly capable of music, if music really is a requirement, then I would suggest sonos or squeezebox...

The specific media I'm looking at is DVD but every room should be able to view a movie independent of the other rooms. Can you store one DVD on the Kaliedescope and have several people view asynchronously (one starts at 7pm, the other person starts the film at 720pm, etc, etc).

Since there is no charge for watching the films, I'm assuming that showing them is legal.

Satellite will be included but that's a whole other topic!jj

Thanks.

no problem... any streamer can do that... (Big K is the only truly legal DVD streamer)...

of course a Big K setup for 12 rooms I am guessing will be in the $150 - $200K range, but you should talk with your authorized Kaliedescope installer...

Sage, PCH, etc would be in the $5 - $10K range depending on how much storage,etc... but you need to break the encryption in order to store the DVD's on the hard drive(s)... that's a violation of the DMCA... easy enough to do though, just get AnyDVD or DVDFab and you are set... just a thought

since when did charging for it (or even logic for that matter) have any impact on our Benevolent Media Overlords?

I am sure they would consider it a Public Performance... same reason Bars/pubs cant just call comcast/etc and get cable, the have to pay a special performance fee...

good luck with that... make sure you check all laws/licensing needs first...

and it can be the same topic, if you either don't care about insane laws, or don't live in the US or EU... ie just run your Sat feeds into the Sage server, then the end user has one common interface for TV/SAT/DVD... and you only need to run 1 wire (ENET to the extender)...
