I've been looking for something to play my HD DVD rips which are in .evo files or whether or not it'd be easier to convert them to another format. VLC will play the sound but sans video. Any help would be appreciated

To play an EVO file (typically) with VC-1 and DD+ tracks, use a customizable DirectShow player such as MPC HomeCinema or Zoom Player MAX with filters:

- Haali Media Splitter

- MPC Video Decoder (HA) or WMVideo Decoder DMO (no HA)

- Sonic CineMaster Audio Decoder 4.3.0 included in Sonic CinePlayer HD Decoder Pack v.4.3.1.240

- EVR or EVR CR (if you want to use HA of MPC Video Decoder)

You may need to add the following registry key to use Haali Media Splitter for EVO inside MPC HomeCinema:

Code:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Media Type\\Extensions\\.evo]
"Source Filter"="{55DA30FC-F16B-49FC-BAA5-AE59FC65F82D}"
{55DA30FC-F16B-49FC-BAA5-AE59FC65F82D} is the CLSID of Haali Media Splitter.

Of course you should be able to play EVO with the 7MC internal player with some registry tweak.

But creating a MKV (as wmansfield mentioned) or a BD ISO or folder structure or M2TS (use Clown_BD) from HD DVD is perhaps better.

PowerDVD 7.3 and Nero Showtime 4 can both play .evo files. You can get a copy of Nero 8 Essentials (OEM version) for as little as $3 (if you can't find the software on ebay or other sources you can always buy a barebones DVD burner from Newegg for under $30 that includes the disc). You then need to purchase the HD plug-in from Nero (about $20, IIRC).
