This is a a continuation of a thread in the tivo forums that went beyond TiVO and was suggested to continue here.

The gist of the question worked out to be;

For someone with a HDTV and DTV what is the best deal to get a HD DTV setup. (tuner, sat dish (+c), OA antenna, install)

Looking at Orbitsat

http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/...p?PID=KTI-24X18 149.95
http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/....asp?PID=PV6110 69.96
http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/...sp?PID=SIR-T165 649.95
http://www.orbitsat.com/Cyberstore/OffAir/TV55.asp 129.95

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hardware: 949

Install?? ?? (at least 200)

I will NEVER get that approved by the wife! It's as much as the TV cost. I hope there is some sort of package deal

Is there a better way?

Check out the package deals at American Satellite .
 www.orbitsat.com also has some good package prices, especially for new Directv subscribers, but I think the best prices I found online were from www.minidishes.tv.

Looks like you copy and pasted the links without first going in to Edit mode. That means the longer links didn't copy over. Here they are again:
http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/p...?PID=KTI-24X18
http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/p...asp?PID=PV6110
http://www.orbitsat.com/cyberstore/p...p?PID=SIR-T165
http://www.orbitsat.com/Cyberstore/OffAir/TV55.asp (This one worked but here's for redundancy :))

Now with that said I would recommend this.. Call DirecTV and ask them for an oval dish. Many people have reported success in either receiving the oval dish for free or a reduced cost. If you fail try again as each customer support representative is different. The other option is the movers plan, if you've recently moved they'll give you a free dish and install it for you: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/learn/MoveProgramming.jsp

If those options fail you can always get an oval dish off of eBay for a relatively low price. DirecTV will also provide you with a Satellite C kit for $8 shipped to your door if you install it yourself. Otherwise I want to say it's a little bit more expensive (but still far cheaper then Orbitsat)

That covers the dish and DirecTV. Then you will need a HDTV receiver (also known as a STB or set top box) and you will need an antenna to get any over the air locals. (DirecTV doesn't offer high definition local channels, that's why the antenna is used.)

The receiver you linked to is only for over the air locals and doesn't include a DirecTV receiver. You'll want to get a receiver that does both.

Options are listed in "The Official AVS HDTV Forum STB Synopsis" at: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=179095

If you will use a component cable from your new receiver to your HDTV set then it really shouldn't matter if you get an old receiver or the new ones coming out. Older ones like the Hughes e86 can be found for $500 at BestBuy.com and newer ones can be found at places such as JandR.com. JandR.com does price match others, I believe people have been getting the Samsung SIR-T165 and Zenith 520 for around $100 less then their list price. (Searches should reveal more)

In terms of antennas people have been recommending the Radio Shack bow tie antenna (now discontinued) if you are close enough to receive the signal. Otherwise you can try places such as TitanTV.com and you can use their antenna selector tool. You may also find antennaweb.org helpful in positioning your antenna. The Terk antennas are generally considered junk here. I don't have any direct experience with them but that is the general consensus here.

If it were me I would go for a new high definition receiver with a DVI output to play it safe for future compatibility. The antenna can be hit or miss but those links should help you, just remember to try and buy it from a place you can easily return it to like Radio Shack. The rest DirecTV should be able to help you with if you get a polite enough CSR. Call during off hours when they are less busy and it may improve your chances. Once you finally get it make sure to thank the CSR, they did after all just save you quite a bit of money. :) (Assuming it works out.)

Good luck!

Hi,

I gave DirecTV a call and told them I was interested in upgrading to HD. After giving me the initial spill of their offer to upgrade me for $67 for oval dish and pro install, I told them how I was already shelling out hundereds for a new receiver and could they cut me a break. I then threw in that Comcast was offering HD and all I didn't have to buy a $700 receiver. So a couple of "let me put you on hold while I talk to my manager", they agreed to send me a new dish, sat c, and pro installation for $85. Free would have been better, but hell the dish is $100 alone so I'm happy.

I'm leaning towards getting the Zenith 520 vs. the Sony HD200 (due to price difference). However, that would mean that I would have to spring for a DVI cable. Does anyone know a good brand/site for them? I admit I really don't know what to look for, there appears to be different types for PC's etc.

Thanks,

Surprisingly, the Zenith includes every cable BUT the DVI cable, while the Samsung TS-160 comes with the DVI cable and little else. Any reason you're not considering the Samsung box?

IAC, I checked Parts Express and Better Cables (links above in banner), and neither appears to have them.

sixone, Try Cables N Mor
Update on my foray into HDTV.

Saw all the posts about free upgrades from DTV for the ellepitical dish. I called and got transfered to customer retention. They lady there wanted to charge me full price for everything. And wanted to sign me up for a year of premium. I declined and called right back. Asked to be transfered to customer retention. Complained that I had a HDTV receiver and wanted the same free upgrade a friend told me about. This guy said oh sure and set it up. They had to do two orders one for the dish $15 and one for the SatC $9.

Now to buy a HD receiver!

Seems like the best choices are the hughes e86 $499 or spend the extra and get the newer Samsung SIR 160

for $699

As I don't really watch that much TV the hughes unit seems a favorite. I have read all the multitude of posts and it seems to me the major difference between the Samsung and the Hughes is a DVI out. Am i missing something - should I be favouring the newer (samsung) model?

Some Best Buy locations have open box models of these priced at $400 & up. A better deal is to wait until the preferred customer weekends and get 10% off which would bring the price down to ~$450. If you don't get a coupon in the mail, don't worry an eager salesman will usually hook you up on a large $ item.
hopefully this isn't too dumb of a question:

We're looking at buying an HD-TV and upgrading our DirecTV service. If we upgrade our round dish to oval, do we need to run a second coax from the dish to our HD-TV (there is only one now).

We also have a bedroom TV that we aren't converting to HD-TV. Can it continue to function as before or are any changes required (e.g. additional cable runs, receiver change, etc.)? (there is one coax from the TV to the dish for this room as well).

Thanks in advance,

No, just reattach the cable to the multiswitch.

You just need to attach that cable to the multiswitch also.

Thanks for the replies,

I was considering it along with the Zenith & Sony and crossed it off the list after reading about the problems people on this board were having with the unit as well as a couple of posts of the PQ being better on the Zenith/Sony.

As a side note I spoke with a representive from Onecall inquiring about the availability of the HD200 and the conversation led to the Zenith vs. Sony. I was of the belief that they were the same unit other than the remote and included DVI cable (even the manuals are identical) but she said the Sony's PQ was superior? Has anyone done any side-by-side tests?

The Sony remote definitely DOES cycle from 480/720/1080/DVI and all inputs. I have the Sony HD200 and have used the button.

One POSSIBLE difference has to do with the button the remote of the Zenith labeled "SD / HD." On the Sony, once person reported that his equivelent button (which is hidden in a compartment on the Sony remote) would let him cucle through ALL available formats: 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i, hybrid 1, etc. I cannot confirm that this is true...This might give a slight advantage to the Sony, IF IT IS TRUE. Again, I have my doubts, though.

I can also confirm that this is true. I can also say that if wasn't true I wouldn't have posted the information in the first place.
OK, I have 2 questions:

1) I have a Sony 34XBR800. For what reason would I want change the format to anything other than "Variable 2" or "Auto DVI":

480i/p-->480p and

720p/1080i-->1080i (it doesn't display 720p natively)

2) and to follow up 1), does the receiver or the monitor do a better job at the upconversion from 720p? In other words should I instead use "Variable 1":

480i/p -- 480p

720p --> 720p

1080i --> 1080i

Thanks,

I had almost the same experience as sixone above. Called DTV and told them I wanted to upgrade to HD. I got a canned answer of $49 (+S/H) for an oval dish, sat c WITH installation. It came to $67 total plus I did need to upgrade my multiswitch when they did the install. Still not a bad deal for $100. Then got the Hughes E86 for $500, a CM 4228 ($65) for OTA and I got HD !!!!! I did have to agree to maintain my programming package for 1 year which I was doing anyway.
