Best PAL-capable VCR player for transferring to DVD?

258 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  secstate
I've gotten interested in transferring movies to DVD that I can't get native on DVD. Some of them are available on PAL VHS tapes.

I'll play the movie on the player and transfer it into a PC for deinterlacing and cleanup. Obviously, I'll need the best PQ VCR player I can find (i.e., good color, clean picture,...).

I've searched the whole website, and haven't found anything on this subject. Any suggestions for what's good?

Thanks!

Before DVDs came out I used to transfer tapes from PAL to NTSC. I saw or used the high end Samsung and Pannys as well as the lower end Awia that would convert from PAL to NTSC. There were all fair at converting from PAL to NTSC but the picture was noticably worse than a regular VHS SP copy. Since you are capturing to a PC you would probably be best to find a decent PAL only player, capture in PAL and convert to NTSC on the computer. The only decent PAL to NTSC conversion I have seen in consumer level electronics has been some of the better multi-region players such as the Cyberhome and a Phillips player, that of course doesn't help you with you VHS . BTW, I use my Awia into my Pany E50 DVD recorder to convert PAL VHS to NTSC DVD. The picture quality isn't perfect but it does work.
