Best player to playback DV inside a .mkv-file?

7084 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Balthazar Lin
I am trying to find the best possible candidate to playback DV inside MP4 and MKV-files.
I have Oppo 203 and it supports playback of DV within MP4-files, but not within MKV-files.

What would be the best media player today for DV, especially if the DV-content is inside a MKV-file?

Thanks for any info!

If you want full FEL playback + lossless audio, then there is non unfortunately. There are some reports of a couple Chinese Android boxes with amlogic SOCs that can do it, but the results have been mixed. That best you're going to get with DV mkvs is one of the Shield, Dunes, or Zidoos that will still apply the DV dynamic metadata to the base HDR layer.

I use MakeMKV to backup all discs to BDMV folders which the Oppo 203 will play back as if you’d put the source disc in the tray and hit go. Should be no need to mess with other formats.

Nvidia Shield Pro has been working marvelously over Plex for me. FEL & MEL.

Can you confirm this is indeed playing DV files in MKV format? If so, I will buy one. I tried PLEX via Roku and it had the same exact behavior that my Oppo 203 does... which is no HDR and image is all purple and pink.

Nvidia Shield Pro is "compatible" with MKV DV Profile 7 FEL but doesn't apply the FEL layer. It will ignore the FEL layer and only apply the RPU (dynamic brightness adjustment or tone mapping). FEL is a second 1080p 10-bit stream that will convert the base HDR10 video to 12-bit. This is the same behavior as all the other players (Zidoo, Zappiti, Dune HD, etc). As noted above, there are a few devices that have a second video decoder that can be used to apply FEL but only for MP4 container (in which lossless audio codec is not supported).

Edit: you can peruse this MakeMkv forum thread to get the latest on MKV with DV7 FEL.

Yep, I'm aware. Most people complain that if they try to view a profile 7 video on shield that they get red tint etc., whereas I do not. That's all I meant by that. I know it's not actually using the FEL layer, and for movies that I care about that for, I have my oppo.

Any device that can play them via MP4 is completely understandable, however, as that is part of the official Dolby spec.

Yes, it for sure plays DV files in MKV format via PLEX, with the caveats as mentioned by hoyalawya.

Gotcha thanks. Wish we had a way to put MKVs into an MP4 container and there wont be any issues or compromises to make.
Mkv and mp4 are just container formats. It's possible t convert between the two without disturbing quality.

Not true. Mp4 doesn’t support DTS-HD for example. So there will definitely be compromises.
