I've been looking to buy a new projector to accompany my old, probably spreadsheet-designed one for some amateur light shows that I have been doing. I am looking for a powerful projector that has saturated colors that will light up large rooms and dance floors etc. While it would be great to have an all around great projector that was multipurpose (ie occasionally watching movies on it) the things I would prefer it to have in somewhat order are: brightness, high contrast, resolution. Things I don't care too much about are: color accuracy, fan noise.

I was looking to spend around $1000 or so. I appreciate it!

Welcome to the forums, TacoSystem.

For $1000, the short list for brand new PJs would probably be:

720p: AX200, Eps HC 720, X9, Mits HC1600

1080p: X10

If you shop around you can probably find a better pj (but used/refurb'd)...

That should get ya started - happy hunting!

I just got an Epson 720 from Visual Apex. Less than $1K shipped (very quickly -- thanks, Brian!). Comes w/ a free spare bulb via mail from Epson -- which is a big plus.

Picture is very nice using Theater Black 1 mode & no tweaking. Projects bright enough for a 133" screen.

I love my HC 720 and highly recommend it. However, you probably can't go wrong with any listed above.

Looks like im late to the party but

you can pick up a 720P Sanyo Plv z60 for under 780 bux if you search it on google shopping.

1200 lumens and 10,000 :1 Contrast.

Decent black levels and 2 hdmi ports

few merchants to choose from and they are new. thats what I did.

Awesome for the money. Hard to find much better without spending a lot more.

Can pick up a Optoma screen on Amazon 100" Matte for under $78bux

$88 after shipping.

so for under 860 you can have a really nice starter set up. thats what I did and with the savings I was able to upgrade my home theater audio with a

used B&W 600 S3 center channel

I have to agree the Epson or the Panny should be a pretty good fit for your needs.

OTOH, I have to disagree about the Z60. I have one and love it but I certainly wouldn't try to use it for a lightshow or to project an image substantially larger than 100". Awesome projector, but it simply wasn't designed for this.

If you want an all around projector, I'd recommend you the BenQ MP624. It may not be for HD movies, but it is well rounded for most ideal situations. It works in ambient lighting conditions since it has 3000 lumens, it also comes with 2500:1 contrast ratio, which is a lot for a $1,000 dollar projector. It's native resolution is set at 1024x768, but it is compatible with 720p or 1080i. Best of all it has HDMI connectivity, so you can hook up your Xbox or PS3 and play it on your MP624!

HAHHAHAH, well. Because I own one myself! I bought mine originally for business purposes, but end up using it more at home for movies and TV. I find it extremely useful and great. Like I mentioned, okay, it might not be as great as a full HD home theater projector, but it does well. Sometimes people are unsure about their wants and needs, so sometimes an affordable, yet more of a well rounded (can do a bit of everything) type of projector is better suited.

Wouldn't you agree so? Well at least that's my take on it. I just want to give other people the options that I realized were out there!

*Edit

How about I also + 1 to SugarBowl's W1000 recommendation then?

I would think that you would only recommend a biz PJ for these reasons:

1. Viewing mostly SD content

2. Need a PJ for
3. Need VERY HIGH lumens over aspect ratio and on a limited budget

Anyone wanting home theater and spending $1K or more should look at HT PJs, not biz PJs.

Thats one of the things I'm debating now 720 or 1080 I already have 2 768 plasmas and sit about 16ft from them where my projector will go I will be sitting no more then 12ft and want a 100 to 120 screen.

I have been looking at the Optoma HD65,Epson 720 but may wait to see what the Epson 705HD is like. These for about 1000 with screen shipped.

For the 1080 have looked at the Optoma HD20 and the Vivitec H1080FD can get these for around 1200 to 1300 shipped with screen,Hdmi cable
