I am looking for a new receiver for a dedicated small home theatre (12'x13', 7.1, acoustically treated). I do not care at all about video or networking capabilities, as I am feeding the video signal from my media server directly to projector, bypassing the receiver. I still want the latest HD sound format and Audissey (which I found very helpful) on the receiver. The budget is 1.5-2K. What is the best option in this price range? Again, I do not care for anything but the sound part. Will I be better off with a pre-pro or low power receiver and additional amp?

Thanks

What speakers do you have? How loud do you listen? You may not need to spend anywhere near your budget to get great sound.

Of the people on AVS that I have some trust in, dsmith901 is one of the few. But given your $1.5-2k budget maybe not. Especially your emphasis on "I still want the latest HD sound format and Audissey (which I found very helpful) on the receiver". FWIW he's a laid back high end type of person.

Anyway, he (dsmith901) recently posted this:

I have Monitor Audio RS series for fronts and Axiom Q8 for surrounds. The content is mostly musicals and action films. so I need both quality and headroom for large dynamic range (but not very much power since the room is rather small). Spending $2k is not a goal, so I'd be very open to getting what I want for less money.

Getting to the goal line is the idea, right? Plowing right on through it with massive spending and tons of power isn't required.

I have an Onkyo SC885 - not made anymore and only available used but the SC886 is current and decodes all of the HD audio that everyone seems to think they need. I'm happy with the DD and DTS and Neo 7. I use an Emotiva UPA-7 amp for power and there is no lack there - it has 125wpc all channels driven. The 886 refurbished from Accessories4Less will set you back $1K and the Emo amp another $700. Under your budget and enought power for nearly any speaker you wish to drive. Mine are 4 ohm - the UPA-7 is rated for 4 ohn.
