I have an X1 PJ that supports refresh rates from 47Hz to 85Hz at it's native resolution of 800x600.

What's the best rate to use for DVD based films (my primary media type)?

I always thought the higher refresh rate the better - but in watching a Chris Rock DVD last night at 72Hz I was getting too much of that odd panning during movement where the pulldown process wasn't working very well. Moving the rate down to 60Hz made it smoother and less noticable.

You are describing uneven motion due to dropped frames as the 62Hz color wheel and the 72Hz refresh rate interact. I personally would enable 3:2 pulldown and run the projector at 60Hz refresh, enough below maximum speed that it will regulate speed nicely. I would also attempt 48Hz refresh with 3:2 pulldown disabled, and see which I preferred. In a fully darkened room even the 24fps of film does not display a lot of flicker.
