I know that most people don't seem to like Sony receivers, BUT a friend wants to buy a Sony receiver and asked. He wants to spend around $1000.


Any suggestions?


I thought that the STR-DA3200ES might be a good option but would the STR-DA5200ES be a better buy?

Well if he is dead set on Sony, I guess I would have to say, go for the highest end model you can get.


The 5200 if you search around should not be much more than a grand.

I would highly recommend sitting him down and making him do his own research on receivers before he buys. If that doesn't change his mind about Sony then the 5200 would probably be the way to go at his budget.

Sony str-dg1000. Same features as the 3200es, but cheaper.

That's almost true. The Sony has a RS232C control, a 12 volt trigger and a 5 year warranty. It is worth the extra $100.00

I have a Sony 7100ES and really like it. I would buy this model again. The high end es series are good stuff.

Sony Es receivers for their price are as good and also built as any avr on the market.A 5 year warranty to go with them.

hmm. I didn't realize the 3200es had the 5 year. That might have been worth the extra $100 over the dg1000 with a 2 year.


In 2 years I will have a new one and this will go to Ebay or Craiglist.

Last year's 3100ES is a fabulous unit - much better than the this years models. IF you don't need HDMI, I'd try to track on down or buy on new on ebay. They only run about $600.00 or so.
