Can anyone recommend a good sub for movies/games for around $400? I don't really want to go higher if possible.

This will go with my SC-05 reciever, Polk Monitor 60's for L/R and CS2 for center. I still need to get my surrounds but those will come later.

All of the threads i've searched for posts in this price range are pretty old so maybe there's some new ones out there that I should look at!

thanks!

Here's a thread seeking the same information that's less than two weeks old

Here's a two page thread at the same price point that two months old

Here's some other threads at the same price point that are within the last 7 months:

The best way to search is using the advance search, title search only option, limit search words to one or two (400) and make sure to highlight the appropriate forum from the list to the right. I used "400" and that's how I found the threads above.

You are very welcome. You probably got caught up in an archive search by accident. Good luck in your search.

Or just save yourself the time and get THIS

It will perform as good or better than any sub $450 and under. Perhaps it's a tad outside your budget but you did say 'around' $400.

When does that come out?

The LFM-1 Compact only weighs 38 pounds. The SVS PB-10 NSD weighs 60 pounds.

IMHO it is worth the difference to get the PB-10 NSD.

Hello,

So long as you do not limit your search to brand new subs, you could get a pretty decent subwoofer for your budget. I would highly recommend checking out the classified section here, Audiogon, and with a be weary proviso, Craigslist/Ebay.

In that range, look for a used Hsu Research, Elemental Dynamics, Paradigm, SVS, and Outlaw. Or if not wanting to risk used, the above mentioned are all excellent value propositions. However, what you can find used in that range will open up many more doors. Audiogon, if there is nothing here, is an excellent place to start.

Just an FYI, the PB-10 NSD is already out, they just have not updated their site and are keeping the "pre-order" pricing I guess to lure customers :p

That's definitely in the lead, i'd rather deal with a new sub. But I have some time to make my decision so I want to make sure It's the right one. Or I won't hear the end of it from my wife

The manual for the Compact actually lists the weight at 55 lbs and the LFM-2 as 37 lbs. Just throwing that out there. I'm guessing the 38 lbs. listing on the website is wrong.

Without listening to either one, it's hard to determine which is better. They have many different attirbutes, such as down firing vs. front firing ports/drivers, cabinet size and design, and different amps. The differences in the two may make one better for one room vs. the other in regards to speaker placement and room acoustics. The PB-10 apparently goes lower down to 20 Hz vs. 25 Hz on the LFM-1 Compact, but there could be a difference in output in the 25Hz - 80+ Hz range.

The ED A2-300 seems to be a popular choice for HT in your price range. Do a search for Craigsub rankings and you'll see it scored better in HT than in Musical score. If you're leaning towards a more musical sub, then I've read that the STF-2 is good choice. The Outlaw LFM-1 Plus can be had for $474 w/free shipping, if you go with B Stock (minor blemishes - open box / returned items with full warranty). The LFM-1 Compact B Stock goes for $349 w/free shipping. I'm currently looking for a sub in the same price range. If you buy one, please post your thoughts and impressions on it (and pics too
), if you have time.
