Best Sub For Monitor Audio RX-1 Bookshelf Speakers

1952 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  cel4145
Ok this is my first time posting. I just bought a pair of Monitor Audio RX-1 speakers and can't afford the Silver Series RXW12 Subwoofer to go with it.

I was thinking to buy the new Bronze Series BXW10 subwoofer, but I heard negative things about it?

Has anyone used this sub and if so, what do you think? Are there any other subs that work well with the Monitor Audio speakers from experience?

I am interested in a detailed musical sub, and not just a boomy EPIK, HSU, or SVS.

My room is 16' X 22' X 8'.

Thanks!

You've heard the subs above and feel they're "boomy"?
Those are the brands I would have suggested that you check out (Outlaw and Emotiva, too.)
Get a sealed sub from an ID source, including the ones you listed. I have the RS-w12 (with the older amp prior to RXw12), and it is worth no where near the $$$ it asks. I made a DIY and it crushes the MA for less than half the price. So either go DIY or ID. I still love how the MA sounds in my 2.1 setup mind you. I would never have paid $1399 for it though...(plus tax)
Hi Guys,

I appreciate the fast response. I have not heard those subs in person. I just saw them all on YouTube with people showing off these massive subs by those brands. I know that you can't hear a speaker through YouTube, but you can get somewhat of a sense if it's detailed or shakes the room. Boomy isn't the right word I guess. Basically, I want something that doesn't sound like I am in the car of one of those kids that drive by my house with the trunk shaking and their hat on sideways.

I have heard the NHT B10-D or B12-D is a very detailed sealed sub. I can also get a new Monitor Audio Bronze BXW10 for $500. The local Monitor Audio dealer also recommended Sunfire subs.

What's the difference between the button looking woofer and the completely concave woofer that seems to be getting popular with Monitor Audio and Paradigm?

OK...I realize now that I was looking for a sealed sub and by boomy I meant port noise from a ported sub. Rythmik seems great but I can't quite afford that. I am trying to decide between the SVS SB-12-NSD and the NHT B12-D. Each are sealed with a DSP amp. Any suggestions?
The ported ID subs are not like "the car of one of those kids that drive by my house with the trunk shaking and their hat on sideways." They are much more SQ oriented than that (not to mention, but some of those kids might be running sealed subs
). But you will get tighter bass out of a comparably priced ID sealed sub over the ported subs.

Keep in mind that the SB12-NSD has a lower frequency response rating. That could be a plus if you plan on using it for any movie watching.

The SVS SB12 is also the "safe" bet in that there are plenty of sub enthusiasts on the AVS subwoofer forum who have that sub and have confirmed how great it is for the price. Read around in the SVS owners thread and you can ask questions there about it. While the NHT B12D might be very good, I haven't seen any one there who owns it.

Finally, what are your listening preferences: percentage music/movie/gaming, genres of music, volume (do you like it loud)? Could be the ported subs are a better choice if you like it very loud, plan on doing a lot of movie watching, or like very bass heavy music. You have a large space for a 12" sealed sub.

Firstly, this belongs in the subwoofer forum.

Second, a lot of those boomy car subwoofers are sealed. Sealed or ported aren't going to make much of a difference in that respect. Also port noise does not cause boominess, unless it is a particularly awful port.

Thirdly, the amp isn't going to affect boominess either, whether DSP or traditional analogue amps.

Did you notice that sticky disappeared from the speaker forum encouraging people to post there?
