Best Sub for Music only <$500

1127 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  PD50U
Looking for a good small sub for music only. Any suggestions for a small (8'' perhaps) sub, that excels more for music then HT? Just needs to be small, and have stereo line level inputs.

I use to have a S-10, but it does not have stereo inputs.
I would highly recomend the Rocket ULW-10 but it does not have stereo inputs either.
How about the Carver/Sunfire Dominator D10 from AudioAdvisor? It's SEALED!

Also does have "stereo" inputs, but why would that matter so much?
Because I am using it with a preamp, and not a processor or AV receiver, so no subout.

Yes...I was thinking of that one, but a little over the budget. I can't find any reviews on that sub. I don't know if 1000W would be too much for my small room.

Stereo out into an RCA Y-Adapter into the LFE input on the sub.

It will work fine.
I was told that you are not suppose to merge the 2 outputs into 1.
How are you planning to drive your mains? I think your set-up might be putting too many restrictions on your choices.

This might be an option:

I agree. I just ordered a second one for my HT. Great sub.

Typically that is good advice. However most subs with a single input were designed to handle matrixing two inputs into one and it will work fine.

Of course you should be sure to double check with the manufacturer on the actual sub you decide to go with.

The ULW-10 I suggested previously will handle it just fine. It is even specified in the manual.

My preamp has 2 sets of outputs, or I can possibly use the 1 set of preouts, and go to the sub inputs, and then output to the power amp, and use the high pass filter, but I don't know if I want to use that option, and cut the lows out of my mains, like a HT set-up.

Is that super 8 a sealed sub also? It seems many people suggest sealed subs for music, although their are not to many lower priced ones.

Indeed, shouldn't pose any problems. Basically every sub ( I don't want to say all because there's probably something out there that I am not aware of) with stereo inputs sums the inputs anyway, which does the same thing as using a y-combiner from stereo out to a mono input. It's not a problem. Indeed, essentially every processor that has a sub-out is doing the same thing on that output.
I'll also vote for the Mirage subs.

I have both the S10 and the S12. Got the S12 from Vann's a few weeks ago for $499. This was an $800 unit.

The Onix X-Sub ($200) has L/R line-level inputs, as well as the normal LFE input.
