If you were to build a sub for $1000 not including amplification, what would it be and why?

One sub, I have a SVS Sub-EQ as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance, Jeff

Id go for the DTS-10 but it will cost you atleast $1100 to $1200 shipped and then your materials to build it and finish id add another $100. So its just over but its not going to get any better than that at all IMO. Second choice is the THT. It cost under $300 to build without amplification and takes way less power than the DTS-10 to reach reference levels output. Majority are using 240watt plate amps to power to THT to well over 120db down to 20hz and past there to around 15hz in some cases depending on your room gain and EQ. Those are your two best choices and both offer amazing SQ perfect for music and HT. The difference between the two can be argued. But for the most part its the extension the DTS-10 are getting solid 14hz and in some cases down to 10hz output WITH EQ and some WICKED room gain. And oh yea the price theres no comparison there either.

to Canada for the dts-20 add about another $400-500 on the price to get it to your place shipped freight. I really really wanted one but in the end I'm just gonna build 2 THT's and see if I can get them to work with the mal-x's.

So really those are the two choices then...

Funny they are the two I have been reading about, but I am looking at something more traditional.

I picture a 4-5 foot high box, 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep, sealed with a 21" driver in my head.

Ideas along that line?

That's almost 40 cu.ft. internal volume.

How big is your room? Is this primarily for home theater or also for music? What percentage?

You could do just about whatever you wanted with 40 cu.ft.

How about testing out maxmercy's cinenabasshorn for us?

You could build a nice IB sub, including amp for that much. Still have to build a box, but no worries about finish, etc. Of course you need the area for the backwave, which some folks don't have.

You could add the Quartet15 to your list. It's $699 and comes with 1 SDX15 driver, 2 passive radiators, 1 1000w amp, cabinet feet and all the mounting hardware.

Sure it might not be as loud as some THT's or the DTS10 but it's a great driver and as a kit has everything you need other than the enclosure. For the average room it would still give great performance. It leaves you $300 to use for finishing the exterior or to add an EQ.

If you are thinking 21" then I think you probably had this in mind.

14 cubic feet looks like it would be big enough.

I am thinking or at least leaning towards that driver yes.

CZ Eddie my room is 15 feet wide,40 feet long and 10 foot ceilings.

I am open to any size as long as it can be carried out of my basement stairs, so the dimensions I mentioned are right in that range.

EP4000 amp to power bridged is not an issue, they are only like $400 and change here in Canada, plus the Audessey technology bass EQ I already have.

I listen to music like 20% the rest is home theater and gaming.

Focus on Theater.

That's a large room. My only advise is it's fairly easy enough to built a sub or subs that will be capable of 120+db's but they have to balance in with the rest of the speakers. There is no point having a sub this capable if your other speakers are not.

I am not worried about speakers, it is a sub question.

I have a request in to Maxmercy on another thread

The latest iteration of CinemaBassHorn will be posted later tonight, after I get the Maelstrom 18" horn posted. It uses the AV-15H driver, and is the best compromise of space vs output vs extension. 2 of them should give you reference down to the low teens, before room gain...

It was originally designed for AVS'er coctostan....

24x24x24 box with the AV15H, 2 PRs and EP2500 driving them.

or

18" diameter sonotube 4 feet high with 2 AV15Hs (top/bottom) push/pull design. Drive them with a Marathon amp if you can find them cheap.
