I have read the threads about subs to match Energy Take 5, but they are a few months old and the suggested subs are no longer available. I looked at The Speaker Company but it appears they went out of business. Here are my details:

receiver: Denon AVR2310CI

room size: 17' x 15' x 9'

budget: around $400

size: looking for 10" unless recommend something different

use: mainly movies (70%), gaming (20%), music (10%)

So with my Energy Take 5's, what sub do you suggest? What crossover should I be sure to get?

Thanks!

Your receiver is way better than your speakers! You'll need a sub that can be crossed over at 120hz.

I was going to recommend SVS, HSU or Elemental Designs subs but none of them seem to go up to 120hz with the crossover.

Maybe one of the BIC subwoofers or Premeir Acoustics PA-120 will work?

It isn't necessary to "match" a sub to your existing speakers. A sub is a sub, for the most part. Now, having said that, some subs are betting with music, while others are better with movies.

HSU builds a good sub, and people tend to feel that they are more musical than others.

Premier Acoustics get good reviews for the price.

BIC America is talked about quite a bit for your price point as well.

The crossovers are adjustable on subs, and you can adjust the LFE output crossover on most receivers as well. The trick is to find a sub that has a high enough crossover for your smaller speakers.

I contacted eD directly about this. Their response is that they simply list the lower frequencies, as most of their customers wouldn't be crossing their speakers above 100hz. (Above those frequencies, the sub will be more locatable.)

From what I understand, you should be fine with those subs up to, and probably above, 120hz.

Thanks for the info everyone. I am aware my speakers are a bit under my receiver. but am trying to watch the budget. My other choice was Definitive Technology, using Promonitor 800's with a ProCenter 1000, but that was pushing my cost a bit.

If I could swing those speakers, am I more in alignment with the receiver quality?

Just because you have a nice receiver doesn't mean that you absolutely must match the best speakers that receiver could handle.

I'm not sure that those DefTech's are a significant improvement over the Take Fives, but I may be wrong. If you were to upgrade, I'd get bigger fronts (bookshelves).

Well, now the thread is morphing into a speaker issue. I was looking to spend around $900 total for a 5.1 speaker system. Then I saw the Energy Take 5's and the reviews and the price enticed me. But I want to do the best I can.

What would y'all suggest for speakers if I have a budget around $1000?

I own the Take 5's and they are GREAT. I personally have a BIC F-12 to go with the Take 5's and I am very pleased. The average person probably can't tell the difference between that setup and one that cost 3x's more.

Yes, there are times when you will hear where your sub is located since the crossover is set over 100Hz (at least I can in my room with my crossover at 120Hz) but it really isn't a big deal.

My F-12 is set on about 2.5 (out of 10) and set to -10db on the receiver (Onkyo RC160) for normal TV and it sounds terrific. For movies I'll turn it up to 4 or so for a little more punch. The other weekend I turned it all the way up to 5 (gasp) and watched Terminator Salvation at a reasonably loud volume and it was amazing. My room size is about 25 x 15 x vaulted celing and the speakers + sub fill it terrifically.

The PA-120 is better looking but it costs about $30 more if that is important to you.

I also chose the BIC F12 to go with my Energy Takes. I love the way they sound together. I will probably upgrade my speaker setup in the next few months or maybe years.. but for now, I love my 7.1 setup with the F12.. I actually ordered a second F12 for a smaller HT in another room of ours.

I have it (F12) lowered down also most of the time, but when watching a movie, I crank it up. Just feeling that powerful bass puts a big smile on my face.

I will probably upgrade my fronts and center to some more quality Energy speakers later, but as of right now I am happy as hell I got this setup.

I use an Onkyo RC160 receiver, to play with these babies.
