Best subwoofers for behind the couch placement?

1101 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  PFury67
I'm in the market for a new sub, and it MUST be placed behind my couch, any thoughts? Budget, $700 is pushing it, I'm happier spending under $450. The room is 19'w x 16'h x 14't (cathedral style), and it opens into the kitchen.

With the way my room is setup, any other location and you can hear the bass localizing to one half of your head. It may not be apparant at first, but it becomes very clear as you listen more and more (or rather, it becomes distracting that the bass isn't even). A good amount of angles in the room, but because the sub is placed directly behind the couch, I don't need much in terms of SPL.

I'm currently considering a STF2 or PB10

What are you using for a sub crossover freq? Either of those subs would be great - I assume you have room for either behind your couch?
An SVS cylinder on it's side is the classic 'behind the couch' sub...

You should be able to get a 20-39PCi delivered within your budget

The sub will be matched with a pair of Boston Acoustics VR2s, so I can cross comfortably down to 60hz, maybe even 50hz (VR2's in the mail atm).

I have just over 5ft of space between the couch and the wall behind me, so I have lots of space to work with.

My current sub is a forward firing, and if I rotate it 90°, the bass image is dramatically effected. If I go for the HSU, which is downfiring, would I be able to rotate the Sub 90° with no ill effects?

Hmmm, what do you mean by on its side?

You lay the cylinder down.
Ha, quite interesting!!! I've never really heard of that before, do most put it flush against the back of their couch? Sonically, a few feet behind my couch is the best spot for my current subwoofer (and I tested ALOT of locations with my current sub).

How well do the cylinder subs work when upright behind the couch?
I have a 20-39PCi about 4 feet from me and it works just fine. Upright, behind the couch should be just dandy.
If you have 5' of space to work with I'd get the new PB12NSD instead of the 20-39 cylinder. I'ts tuned a little lower than the cylinder, and it won't stick up behind the couch :)

PB12nsd ordered!

I emailed SVS and this the PB12nsd is what they recommended. They also recommended the PB12nsd/2, but I let my wallet make up my mind for this decision ;) . Whatever the case is, it is surely to beat my old Yamaha subwoofer (it had a great run though!)
