Do you want the best picture right out of the box or are you willing to calibrate the TV (either you doing it or someone else)? I only ask because I have seen some lower tier TVs that didn't look so good at first but hold up quite well after being calibrated.

Thank you.

Thanks for the insight. I am willing to plug in settings that I find online. That much I can figure out

I would recommend looking at the following TVs:

JVC 42" LED: http://www.amazon.com/JVC-JLE42BC3500-Led-120hz-1080p/dp/tech-data/B0094NPF9K/ref=de_a_smtd

Samsung 40" LED: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00723QKVQ

LG 42" LED: http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-42LN5400-42-Inch-LED-LCD/dp/B00BB9ORUS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1368302091&sr=1-1&keywords=42ln5400

If you want a smart TV, you can usually go up about one level for those TVs though it will cost more (potentially a lot more depending on brand).

As for why I chose those TVs: My friend used to have a JVC and parents still do. It has been calibrated and the picture looks real good. The only potential downside would be that the blacks are lighter than other TVs (they are LCD though, not sure if the LEDs do a better job). I currently own a Samsung and, though I haven't calibrated it yet, but the picture still looks real good. Brightest of the the three mentioned and deep blacks. As for the LG, I think that it has real good viewing angles and though they tend to have lighter blacks, they can really do a good job with color rendition as they offer the most complete set of calibration settings.

On a side note, what state do you live in? I can calibrate a TV for you if you leave near me (feel free to PM me if you don't want to openly post that information).

Thank you.

If you can get to a Best Buy or similar look at the sets there I would hesitate to buy one unseen everybody has different preferences

You will find the Toshibas usually stand out in that size and price point for picture quality. At least they did when I bought one in Feb . The only two sets that were as good in the store under ~4- $500.00 where a Samsung and a Sony . The LG was third it was good , the other brands and the Insignias followed The discount brands at Wall * Mart Seiki ,Westinghouse,Element, Sceptre etc couldn't match the Toshiba ,Samsung or Sony for picture quality . I did a lot of shopping at various stores at least that was my experience. Of course none of these while some were very good can touch my 50" plasma for picture quality .
