I like and have the Oppo 980H which is a nice piece of gear and it upconverts very well.

I also have an HD-A3 hd dvd player and it has a slight edge above the Oppo.

This is from The fifth element superbit dvd upscaled to 720p.

If you like the Denon then go with the 1940ci.
Thanks, I dont realy notice that much of a differance. I guess the oppo are as good as I've read.
It may be the lighting from the flash...but I can actually see more detail on the left side of the eye in the white with the Oppo...I can see more veins there...I'm running a Hp2207 on a Radon pro 9700 at 1680x1050 too...

Lou...if you have both SD & HD of the movie Transformers...could you do a shot like this with that one...I think the transfer was as good as any of my Super bit movies are...

The upcoming ABT based Oppo 983 will probably be the best player around that price. Also, based on those shots, I'd say the 980 has the edge over the Toshiba.
I own the 981 and am very satisfied with it. My question is, what is the difference between a superbit dvd, and "normal?" dvd? And just off the shelf, is it plain to see the difference on the box?

Superbit DVDs are normal DVDs with more than usually generous bitrate encoding. Sometimes they developed new masters for the disc. It was a Sony tradename; other well-mastered discs are as good.

The Superbit discs were well-marked; I recall a big silver border on the front cover. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superbit .

Sure. Presumably copying meant stripping out copy-protection, but upscaling over HDMI is alllowed, copy protected or not. It's when using component that copy protection matters.

I certainly hope so..I hope they make a 4x1 HDMI switcher next year too...The stand is starting to get a little crowded
