Im planning on getting a set for my mom for her birthday/mothers day. I know it's late in the game cuz i's only a couple of days away but I'm wondering if there are any clear standout winners of the 'bang for the buck'/ 'value' wars. She's elderly and not especially discriminating or concerned about these matters so I don't need anything ultra. Can anyone recommend a set--Olevia, Vizio, Maxent, Sceptre or is there a Sharp/Sony which is similarly priced etc?

Give her an IOU from a costco.com 32" inch set.

I thought Olevia had a problem with SD picture quality. Do you only watch HD or did they get that fixed? There is a thread about it.

It's slightly more expensive, but I have the LG 32", 32LC2D, display since Christmas. It works great for both SD and HD TV (it's on almost 24/7 without a problem). With their "ISP" processing, it doesn't exhibit the motion blur (on fast panning) that most other LCD displays show (I have a 27" Olevia too and the motion blur is bad). CC seems to have the best prices on the LG sets. The newer LG xxLC7D models (32" to 42") have a better contrast ratio, but in the daytime, it's not that noticeable. I picked the LG because it had a better picture than the competing sets that I saw in all of the stores I went to.

NOTE: My 32LC2D is very close to the same picture quality as the old 27" Sony CRT set that it replaced.

It varies by model. The Olevia 747i is regarded by some as having the best SD picture bar none among LCDs.

Olevia uses a variety of processors so one cannot generalize for the entire line. I have a 542i which has an MTK scaler (very good SD performance), and a 332h with a PixelWorks scaler (good but not great).

If you consider Olevia, research the individual model you are interested in.
