Posted last week about the best player for my new Sony 34XBR960 CRT (1080i native and HDMI) and got some recommendations that mostly leaned towards the universal type players that handled audio and video really well. What about a player for video only?

I will not be running it through any type of audio system or anything, just straight through to the TV. Price is not really an option but would prefer somewhere around $500 range?

Denon 2900, the older Panasonics that everyone raves about, the Panny s97 IF it lives up to its pedigree. The Denon 2910 (although the 2900 is a better unit, even without DVI and HDMI.)

If it comes out on time, which I doubt, the Yamaha s2500 might be something to look at. (Supposedly, Yammy told me at the end of this month. I very seriously doubt that.)

I've compared my Zenith DB318 outputting 1080i with my Panasonic RP82 outputting 480i. They look identical to me (on Sony). The scaling to 960 would (in theory) be better than sending a 1080i. The new Panasonic model coming out looks to be a great value. The Denon 2910 is a nice product for the price (same video as 3910). Stay away from the Toshiba and Samsung.

That XBR960 TV is the best on the market, value and performance wise. It'll have a field day scaling anything you throw at it.
